Abstract.Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) Responses to Controlled Sound Stimuli were Compared in the 32nd, 35th and 39th week of pregnancy. Though a tendency to a greater FHR response to sound was found as gestation advanced, this increase would seem to be so small that it may be ignored in practice. The earlier demonstrated influence of stimulus intensity and prestimulus heart rate level on the FHR response to sound were confirmed.

Abstract.The fetal heart rate response to a controlled sound stimulus was recorded in 36 pregnant women before and after a maternal peroral dose of either 80 mg propranolol, or placebo. The sound stimulation was repeated 60 minutes, 120 minutes and 180 minutes after the drug administration. The fetal heart rate response to sound was significantly depressed by this moderate dose of propranolol. The sound stimulation method is found to reflect sensitively the immediate influence of propranolol on the fetus.

Abstract.A prospective longitudinal investigation was performed to study variations in the occurence ofActinomyces israeliiwith reference to four microorganisms, staphylococ‐ci,E. coli, P. acnesandC. albicans, in the female genital tract. Fifteen healthy women were studied during all phases of the menstrual cycle. Sampling was made from the cervix, vagina and perineal area three times a week during two consecutive menstrual periods and during menstruation from napkins and tampons. Altogether 1 108 samples were taken on 349 sampling occasions for different cultural procedures.A. israeliiwas identified in all women, in varying frequencies (range 4 to 74% of sampling occasions). As a mean,A. israeliiwas recovered in 24% of the perineal samples, 13% of the vaginal and 6% of the cervical samples. The occurence ofA. israeliiwas related neither to the recovery of reference microorganisms nor to the phase of the menstrual cycle, the amount of bleeding or discharge, the pH of the vaginal specimens, the contraceptive method used, or to the use of different sanitary products. Abstract.Ten women with normal pregnancies who underwent an elective cesarean section received orally 200 mg of aminophylline every 6 hours for 24—36 hours prior to surgery. The levels of aminophylline and caffeine were measured in maternal and cord sera and in amniotic fluids. The mean level of aminophylline (± SD) in maternal serum was 10.4 ± 1.74 μg/ml, and in cord serum 11.2 ± 1.25 μg/ml. The mean aminophylline level in amniotic fluids was 8.2 ± 1.42 μg/ml. The serum aminophylline levels were within the therapeutic level range. Caffeine levels in those specimens ranged between traces to 6μg/ml which correspond to the normal diet

Abstract.The incidence and magnitude of retinal hemorrhages (RH) in a group of 23 preterm infants (29–35 weeks) born spontaneously in vertex presentation have been compared with those of 23 others (28‐35 weeks) born by gentle extraction with small forceps. Distribution to the groups was random. The overall frequency of RH in both groups together was low, 6%, with no statistically significant difference between the groups. No fundi with severe (grade III) hemorrhages were seen. Both the incidence and magnitude of RH were less in the preterm neonates when compared with previously reported figures in term infants born spontaneously or with forceps extraction. Abstract.Maternal counting of fetal movements is increasingly used as a clinical method for assessment of fetal health. The present study established normal limits for two methods of subjective fetal movement recording. Four hundred‐and‐seventeen randomly selected women with low‐risk pregnancies recorded the time necessary for 10 fetal movements every morning and also the number of fetal movements during 15 min every evening. The study was carried out between gestational week 34 and parturition. Two hundred‐and‐twenty‐two consecutive women answered a questionnaire after the end of the study. 70% of the women counted fetal movements every day; 66.5% preferred the evening to the morning recording. In a strictly selected normal group (n = 129), no significant change was found in the number of fetal movements or in the time for 10 fetal movements with advancing gestation or approaching parturition. The results of the evening sessions were not influenced by maternal parity, fetal weight, or fetal sex. Abstract.A total of 212 patients coming for removal of the uterus due to a benign condition were interviewed by the first authour before operation. Of these patients 28 had ade‐nomyosis, while 157 had neither adenomyosis nor external endometriosis; these two groups were compared with respect to duration of menstrual bleeding, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, urinary symptoms and sacral and lower abdominal pain. Abstract.A triphasic combined oral contraceptive containing fluctuating amounts of ethinylestradiol and levonorge‐strel was tested clinically in a multicenter trial at six hospitals in Norway. 367 women were included in the study, 3 588 cycles were studied, and the follow up period was 12 months. The one year continuation rate was 67%. Five pregnancies occurred during the study period. All of them had to be considered as patient failures. The causes for stopping medication were side effects in about 50% and the rest for personal reasons. The cycle control taking into account duration of bleeding, amount of flow, and intermenstrual bleeding was good and comparable to the low‐dose monophasic combined pills. The incidence of side effects was low. One woman had an increase in systolic blood pressure to more than 140 mmHg. Thrombophlebitis was not registered. Abstract.In the 36th week of pregnancy, levels of serum prolactin (PRL) (p<0.01) and estriol (p<0.05) were significantly lower in 101 consecutive women smoking 10 cigarettes or more per day, compared with a control group of 104 non‐smoking pregnant women. Cord serum PRL was not related to maternal smoking habits, whereas estriol was significantly (p<0.05) lower in the infants of smokers, compared with the control group. The lower PRL levels in cigarette‐smoking pregnant women may be due either to a direct effect of nicotine or secondary to lower estrogen levels, and the finding may be of clinical importance in relation to lactat
