Abstract.Thirty‐three patients with vaginal candidosis were treated with natamycin vaginal tablets for 10 days and their partners were treated double‐blind with natamycin cream/ placebo cream. Follow‐up examinations were carried out one week after the treatment was discontinued and again about one month later. The cure rate in patients having actively treated partners was 94%, not differing significantly from the cure rate of 88% in patients whose partners had been treated with placebo. One month after the treatment there was a high recurrence/re‐infection rate, about 30% in both groups. Thus, treating the partners of patients with vaginal candidosis has no influence upon the therapeutic outcome or recurrence rate. The recurrence is presumably due to re‐infection from the patien

Abstract.Antepartum Cardiotocographs (CTGs) were obtained at weekly intervals from 28th − 30th week of pregnancy onwards in 111 apparently normal pregnancies. A new CTG score was used to assess the 1 196 CTGs obtained, 80 per cent of which proved normal. Minor pathology was seen in 19.1 per cent, while moderate or severe pathology was seen in only 0.9% of the CTGs. Of 16 babies born small‐for‐date, 15 had a pathological CTG on one or more occasions. There was a significantly greater incidence of small‐for‐date infants when two or more pathological CTGs were observed. Nineteen of 20 women whose babies developed late decelerations during labor had at least one pathological CTG. All infants with an Apgar score<5 and all acidemic fetuses had one or more pathological CTGs. All women who required cesarean section because of fetal distress during labor had pathological CTGs on two or more occasions. Abstract.The circulating levels of prolactin (PRL), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol‐17β were determined by radioimmunoassay in 76 normal healthy women in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, 54 consecutive anovulatory non‐diabetic women and 20 consecutive diabetic women with anovulation. An elevated plasma PRL concentration was found in 1/20 (5%) of the diabetic women and in 17/54 (32%) of the non‐diabetic anovulatory women (p0.05) from those found in non‐diabetic women with anovulation. Diabetic women with secondary amen‐orrhea had significantly (p0.05). These data indicate that diabetic patients with anovulation have hypothalamic and/or pituitary defects. Furthermore, the low prolactin and LH levels despite a low estradiol‐17β concentration may suggest an increased hypothalamic dopamine activity in patients with diabetes mellitus a

Abstract.Various techniques of metroplasty were performed in 32 cases of double uterus. In these patients the fetal survival rate before the operation was nil, whereas post‐operatively it reached as high as 92.6%.Strassmann's operation was carried out in 16 cases, Jones&Jones's modified method in 12 cases and Tompkins's operation in 4 cases. The merits and demerits and the applicability of each technique and the various types of uterine malformation are discussed. It is concluded that a correct diagnosis of uterine malformation can only be established by a combination of precise HSG with direct macroscopical observation of uterine body. The Strassmann transverse incision is well suited for a bicornuate uterus, and Jones&Jones's wedge‐shaped fundal resection for a partial septate uterus. The postoperative deformation in the fundus uteri is most frequently seen after the application of Strassmann's method, and is much less common with the modified method of Jones&Jones.Metroplasty can be applied in such cases of uterine malformation as when primary sterility is complained of but where any other cause for sterility is ruled out or is deemed to be corrected.Maximum care should be taken to prevent postoperative adhesion. Abstract.Strips of ovarian hilar tissue taken from 11 post‐menopausal women were examined histologically and found to contain clusters of hilus cells in contiguity with non‐mye‐linated nerve fibers. No other steroidogenically active structures were found. Specimens from these strips were incubated for 30 and 240 minutes in Krebs bicarbonate buffer containing 5.5 mM glucose and 1% bovine serum albumin. The specimens produced measureable amounts of androstene‐dione, estradiol‐17β and progesterone in vitro. The major steroid formed was androstenedione, and this pattern of steroidogenesis appeared similar to that of postmenopausal ovarian stroma. However, the amounts of steroids formed were considerably higher than in stromal tissue. This implies that the hilus cells possibly may be of greater importance, qualitatively, than the stroma cells for steroidogenesis in the postmenopausal ovary.Addition of hCG to the incubated specimens elicited increase in both cyclic AMP formation and steroid synthesis, especially of estradiol‐17β, indicating a preserved responsiveness to gonadotrophin in hilus cells from postmeno

Abstract.α2‐Antiplasmin and α2‐macroglobulin have been studied during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and parturition in healthy women, and during use of various types of contraception in both healthy and diabetic women, and compared with a reference group of healthy men and women.α2‐Antiplasmin showed a slight sex difference, with higher values in women. The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle showed slightly higher values than the other phases. α2‐Antiplasmin increased during pregnancy, decreased (probably due to consumption) during labor and increased again in the puerperium. Treatment with neither combined contraceptive pills nor low dose progestogen pills gave any changes in α2‐antiplasmin.α2‐Macroglobulin showed low values during menstruation. The increase during pregnancy and treatment with combined contraceptive pills is in accordance with earlier findings.It is concluded that synthesis and metabolism of α2‐antiplasmin are under hormonal influence. Abstract.A double‐blind cross‐over study was performed on 21 patients treated for endometrial carcinomas who had severe menopausal symptoms. The patients were randomized into two groups and received medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 100 mg twice daily per os for 12 weeks and a placebo for 12 weeks. A significantly better effect on hot flushes and sweating was obtained with MPA than with the placebo. On average the maximum effect was achieved by MPA after 4—6 weeks. Six patients had a weight gain of more than 3 kg during the MPA administration, compared with none during the placebo administration. No significant difference was found in the blood pressure increase above 160/90 mmHg between MPA and placebo groups. Patients with endometrial carcinoma may risk exacerbation of their disease by undergoing therapy with exogenous estrogen. In contrast, MPA has been found of value in the treatment of disseminated endometrial carcinomas. Abstract.Artificial abortions were performed on 7 patients during mid‐pregnancy by intra‐uterine instillation of 0.1% rivanol and catheters. The changes in uterine contractility during the treatment were monitored continuously by intra‐amniotic pressure recording. Uterine activity developed a gradual but steady increase and abortion was completed within 22 to 47 hours. A significant increase in uterine contractility started after a lag of several hours. Neither hyper‐tonus nor hyperactivity was noted during the treatment. The fetus was delivered unaffected in all cases. The placentas delivered showed normal histological integrity, and an autora‐diographic study established the viability of trophoblasts. These results suggest that the abortive effect of rivanol and catheter on the uterus and placenta is different from that induced by other
