Determination of total activity for lactate dehydrogenase (LD) as well as electrophoretic separation and quantitative determination of the individual LD‐isoenzymes was performed in 431 samples of uterine fluid obtained by the Gravlee Jet Wash technique or a described simple device for endouterine aspiration. The isoenzyme pattern for each menstrual phase was characteristic. The study population included 18 patients with endouterine neoplasia. All these malignancies were characterized by increased total LD‐activity and/or abnormal distribution of the individual LD‐isoenzymes compared to proliferative phase and would consequently have been discriminated at postmenstrual or postmenopausal examination. The predictive value of the ratio of hPL concentrations in amniotic fluid/maternal serum has been investigated in 24 complicated pregnancies. A correct prediction of the fetal outcome with respect to low birth weight and/or dysmaturity was found in 75 per cent of the pregnancies compared to 67 per cent for total estriol in serum. Serum hPL alone did not seem to have a satisfactory predictive value in this small study.

Seventy parturient women were randomized into two groups, one receiving transcutaneous nerve stimulation, the other mock stimulation with an identical looking apparatus. The patients' assessment of pain relief and the use of analgesics during labor were recorded. There was no difference between the two groups in the degree of pain relief. There was no reduction in the need for analgesics which could be ascribed to the use of nerve stimulation. The use of analgesics in each patient was correlated to the duration of labor.

A single dose of 0.5 mg prostaglandin E2in viscous gel was administered intracervically to induce labor in 150 patients with a favorable cervix. All but 5 patients (97 per cent) were delivered within 12 hours. No adverse maternal or fetal effects were registered. The method, which enables induction without primary amniotomy, was easy to perform and well accepted by the patients.

Twenty women in the perimenopause were studied for 12 months during which sodium‐piperazine‐estronesulphate 2.5 mg/day was given for 3 weeks out of 4 as a hormone replacement therapy.Blood samples were drawn at the start of therapy, then after 3, 6 and 12 months and analyzed for serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, cholesterol content of high density lipoprotein (HDL) fraction and the relative fatty acid composition of serum lecithin.Triglyceride levels were increased after 3 months (p<0.01). After that there was a gradual decline to almost pretreatment levels. Total cholesterol decreased during the latter period of treatment and became virtually normal; significantly lower levels (p<0.01) were found at 12 months. The HDL‐cholesterol, which constitutes most of the high density lipoprotein fraction, showed a continuous increase and reached statistical significance at 12 months (p<0.01). This type of lipoprotein pattern is associated with a reduced risk of ischemic cardiovascular disease.After 3 and 6 months of treatment an increase in the relative content of palmitic acid in serum lecithin was seen, an increase that might indicate an altered liver lecithin synthesis, usually seen in cholestasis. Of forty‐three perimenopausal women aged 40.1–56.5 years with climacteric complaints 25 were treated with sodium piperazine estrone sulphate 2.5 mg daily and 18 were given methyl scopolamine. All subjects had initial serum FSH levels in the postmenopausal range (20 U/l). The serum levels of FSH, LH, unconjugated immunoreactive estrogens, total estrone, total dehydroepiandrosterone (DHAS), and the urinary low polar estrogens were followed during 18 months of treatment. In the estrogen treated group serum unconjugated immunoreactive estrogens and total estrone as well as urinary low polar estrogens increased significantly during treatment. The serum levels of FSH decreased significantly during the whole test period; LH only at three months. No effects could be seen on serum DHAS. In the group given methyl scopolamine the only changes found were a decrease in FSH at three months and a positive trend for LH (during the whole treatment period). In the total material, positive correlations were found between pretreatment values of unconjugated immunoreactive estrogens and total estrone and between total estrone and DHAS. It has been suggested that the Okabayashi technique for radical hysterectomy in cervical cancer results in fewer urological complications as compared with the Wertheim‐Meigs technique. Of 479 women with cervical cancer operated on consecutively during the period 1963 to 1978 by the Okabayashi operation, 52 (10.8 per cent) had urological complications (17 bladder and ureter injuries, 35 fistulae and strictures). Thirty‐five elective urological operations were required (Table IV). Pethidine (100 mg) was administered i.m. to women in labor at different times before delivery. The interval before respiration in the newborn became sustained was shorter if pethidine was given less than one hour before delivery. The respiratory rate of the newborn increased after naloxone injection in 40 per cent of the cases, mostly when intrauterine exposure to pethidine exceeded one hour. The plasma concentrations of pethidine and norpethidine were measured in mother and newborn. The concentrations in the umbilical vein and artery indicated a continuous net transfer of pethidine from mother to fetus for approximately two hours. This correlates with the clinical finding of maximal neonatal depression 2–3 hours after maternal injection. The concentrations of norpethidine increased with a longer time interval between injection and delivery, but were probably too low to have any effect on the newborn. The usefulness of ultrasonic examination in the diagnosis of fetal abnormalitites is shown in three cases of fetal abnormalitites recognized by ultrasonic scanning (USS). Scanning was supplemented with hormone analysis, chromosome studies and alfafetoprotein tests (AFP) carried out on the amniotic fluid, as well as fetography.The first case was of right hydronephrosis magno gradu, dilated left kidney pelvis and ascites, stillborn at 32 weeks gestation.
