AbstractThe present investigations were performed to determine, by using the macro‐phage migration inhibition test (MIT), whether cell‐mediated hypersensitivity to streptolysin‐O (SLO) was developed in mice infected withStreptococcus pyogenesas well as in patients with mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (MCLS), with the following results:1. The splenic lymphocytes from murine hosts infected with B‐346 op strain ofS. pyogenes, which fails to induce cellular immunity in infected mice, showed a complete lack of responsiveness to SLO. In contrast, the mice infected with streptococci of Sv and S‐43 strains, both of which possess an intrinsic activity of eliciting enhanced cellular hypersensitivity in the same species of animals, exhibited positive responses to the hemolysin from strep‐tococcal culture supernatant.2. Although a considerable number of MCLS patients in the acute phase of the illness failed to respond to SLO, a complete restoration of their responsiveness was observed in parallel with recovery from the acute illness. AbstractEvolution of the seizure types according to age in 20 outpatients with benign childhood epilepsy with centro‐temporal spikes (BECT) was studied. BECT satisfied the following criteria: 1) normal intelligence, 2) central and/or mid‐temporal spikes with normal background activities on the interictal EEG recordings, and 3) partial and/or generalized seizures in sleep. The patients were divided into two groups according to the clinical course; P (n = 10): patients with only (n = 6) or predominantly (n = 4) partial seizures, G (n = 10): those with only (n = 7) or predominantly (n = 3) generalized seizures. No difference in the age at onset was noted between the two groups. There were also no indications that the seizures tend to generalize at a younger age or remain partial at an older age. AbstractA boy with severe growth and psychomotor retardation, facial dysmorphism, a large atrial septal defect, limitation of joint movement and hearing impairment is described. High‐resolution banding chromosome analysis showed interstitial deletion of the proximal segment of chromosome 3: 46, XY, del(3)(p12p14.2)de novo. AbstractWe report a case of 12‐year‐old girl with Cohen's syndrome (CS) associated with diabetes mellitus (DM). She had the characteristic facies, with a short philtrum, an open‐mouth appearance, prominent maxillary central incisors, high palate, mild maxillary hypoplasia and micrognathia. Other features included truncal obesity, short stature, mental deficiency, small hands and feet, and accentuated thoracic kyphosis. She had been hypotonic during the neonatal and early infantile periods. Laboratory examinations showed hyperglycemia and glucosuria. HbAland HbA1c levels were raised. A 75‐g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) showed glucose intolerance consistent with DM, but there was a normal level of urinary C‐peptide. AbstractThe ultrasonographic findings in periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) in the newborn are described, and the relationship between PVL and group B streptococcal (GBS) infection is discussed. Two newborn infants (one preterm and one term) suffered from early onset GBS sepsis with shock; they showed increased echogenicity in the periventricular regions; one of them developed cystic changes.
