AbstractAn intrafamilial serological and virological surveillance of mumps was carried out in Nagoya, a Japanese large city; where urbanization has been in progress rapidly and children are suffering from mumps sporadically nearly all the year around.Fourty five families with sporadic cases of mumps were studied. Of 59 sensitive contacts in the family, 33 suffered from clinically apparent mumps and 24 progressed subclinical infection. Only two of them escaped from the infection after exposure. Subclinical infections were more frequent in younger children.Among 7 sensitive contacts who resulted in subclinical infection after the exposure, 5 children were found to discharge mumps virus. Virus was also isolated from two mothers of the indicator cases, although their serological examinations revealed that they were apparently re‐infected persons.It may be possible to postulate that 1) in the families dwelling in the urban area of the city, mumps virus has very high communicability, 2) subclinical infections were more frequent in younger children, 3) subclinically infected and re‐infected persons would be sources of virus transmission, as well as mumps patie

AbstractProspective, periodical sero‐epidemiological surveillance on mumps was carried out in three different populations in Aichi prefecture. 1) In a newly developed residental quarter full of big apartment buildings, where heavy population density burst has been occurring, mumps has been observed as an endemic disease. Serologically, almost all the children under six years old has experienced mumps infection in such an area. 2) In an old city with stable population dynamics, mumps outbreaks have been taken place pediodically. SummaryThe prognosis in 1000 asthmatic children who were followed up 5 to 15 years after the first attack was studied. Sex made no difference in the prognosis. Severity of asthma and treatment seemed to play some role in the prognosis of asthma. Mild cases and the specific hyposensitization group had a better prognosis. In the mild group none died. On the other hand in the moderately severe group 0.3% were dead and in the severe group 3.4% were dead.The group having no other allergic diseases revealed a better prognosis, but statistically not significant. Familial predisposition to allergic disease made no difference in the prognosis.

SummaryThe in vitro colony formation in 27 children with normal bone marrow and 37 children with acute leukemia (25 cases at onset or relapse and 12 cases during complete remission) has been studied. The number of colonies per 2 × 105cells in children with normal bone marrow ranged from 110 to 504 and the average count was 248 colonies. This was a higher number of colonies than that reported in adult bone marrow. The colonies were about 65% compact colonies and about 35% loose colonies.In 19 cases of acute leukemia with the blasts in excess of 95% at onset or relapse, there was generally a decrease in colony forming capacity. One case of ALL showed an almost normal colony forming capacity. All of the 6 cases with the blasts of 30 to 60% developed colonies, but the number of colonies was less than that of normal bone marrow. Colony forming capacity in 12 cases with remission was similar to normal bone marrow. From the results, it is considered that in general colony formation in acute leukemia may be related to the ratio of blasts found in the bone marrow; however, in some cases of acute leukemia at onset or relapse there may be blasts that can differentiate and maturate
