Abstract.Loneliness, a lack, and solitude, a self‐sufficiency, are distinguished. Winnicott's concept of the capacity‐to‐be‐alone is described as the basis of solitude. A child who is watched over non‐intrusively by a good‐enough mother acquires the foundations of solitude in later life. Where the capacity to be alone has not developed adolescent breakdown may occur. The lonely adolescent encounters bodily phantasies which he may be unable to tolerate. Loneliness is then avoided by clinging or isolation. In psychotherapy the importance of these adolescent experiences is often neglected. ABSTRACTViolence can be understood as the exercise of physical force so as to inflict injury on or damage to persons or property. In another sense it denotes the perversion of meaning. I indicate here connections between the two senses of violence in both social and individual spheres. I propose that the perversion of meaning is a condition underlying the use of physical violence.

ABSTRACTIn this, the first of two related papers, the process is examined by which a couple were helped to separate, temporarily and emotionally, through a brief offer of psychodynamic therapy. The therapy comprised six weekly sessions of one hour's duration, an input often considered inadequate for effective analytic psychotherapy. The paper examines the interrelationship between an unconscious shared phantasy which had produced deadlock in the marriage and two structural aspects of the therapeutic offer ‐ its brevity and the decision to see the partners separately. Abstract.A model for describing and judging change ina couple relationship isset out, drawing on a follow‐up method established at the Tavistock Clinic for the assessment of change inindividual patients. We present the follow‐up work done with the couple in the chronological order in which it occurred.Our aim is to show how a psychodynamic formulation of a relationship can be made by using the concept of the shared unconscious phantasy as a factor which describes and justifies treating separate individuals as part of a single system.
