ABSTRACTThis paper offers a reading of Melanie Klein's concept of the depressive position based on primary texts. A problematic area is uncovered, resulting from a contradictory tension amongst phenomena grouped under Klein's concept. Specifically, the author notes two motifs that run through her descriptions, which are metaphorically labelled in this paper as ‘tragic’ and ‘moral’. These are shown to negate each other in experiential terms, as the more primitive ‘tragic’ level implies irrevocable loss and hence catastrophic states, whereas the more mature ‘moral’ level derives strength from reparation. ABSTRACTFreud's dream of 1895, ‘Irma's Dream’, stands at the beginning of psychoanalytic theory, but Freud's analysis only glancingly refers to the ‘unknown’ elements that are found at ‘the navel of the dream’. ABSTRACTThe foundation matrix described by Foulkes embodies values, standards and myths of each culture as well as our common biological characteristics. The workshops of the European Association for Transcultural Group Analysis have revealed how much of this matrix is unconscious, taken for granted, until we are confronted by people of another culture or have to move from one culture to another. Such a move is often traumatic. The abuse of difference is integral to historical tragedy and trauma, but a move from paranoid destructiveness to depressive reparation is possible in favourable circumstances.Primitive morality is contrasted with more mature ethics. In the microsphere the basis of a sense of justice and fairness is traced to the nursing couple and the early family. In the macrosphere its socio‐cultural base is seen to be manifested in family rules and laws of inheritance. ABSTRACTThis paper focuses on the psychological experience of children who were separated from their parents because they sent them to England to save their lives from the impending Holocaust in continental Europe. The parents of these children expressed their love and concern to ensure their offspring's survival through the self‐sacrificial act of parting with them. What they could not prevent were the traumatic effects of this separation and its sequellae. Drawing on clinical material of former Kindertransportees as adults from her private practice and group work with a colleague, Ruth Barnett offers an understanding of the psychic journey that was imposed on these children by the deliberately inflicted atrocities to which their families and communities were subjected in the name of genocide and for the purpose of ‘ethnic cleansing’. ABSTRACTThis account of the inpatient psychoanalytic psychotherapy of a mother and child at the Cassel Hospital, London is of a serious case of so‐called ‘Munchausen's syndrome by proxy’. The mother presented two of her children to medical staff with complaints which were later found to be due to her chronic poisoning of them, by salt administration, which narrowly missed causing their death. It is an account of a treatment using both individual and group analytic methods in a psychoanalytic therapeutic community. Attention is drawn to the mother's use of projective identification defensively and malignantly in a concrete fashion and its gradual conversion into a more benign agent.
