摘要:
We argue that the development of artificial intelligence techniques is bringing about fundamental changes in the way we represent and reason about the physical world. From a control engineering perspective, such methods offer a significant extension of the available method for systems modelling, and hence open up exciting prospects for the diversification of control methods to other application areas, e.g. automated fault diagnosis, simulation and training. However, such diversification brings with it the need to clearly establish the principles, and hence the limitations, behind each technique. Accordingly, we propose a classification of system models in terms of their knowledge classes and characteristics, and relate these to existing approaches to the use of Al methods in control. Such a classification is a necessary precursor to developing a methodological approach to identifying the most appropriate technique for a given generic class of applications.

摘要:
The wide range of applications involving automatically guided vehicles presents many problems for the guidance and control of such vehicles. The difficulties encountered in preparing an intelligent autonomous vehicle to travel across often unknown and frequently hazardous environments require the co-ordination of many sensors. Not only have the vehicles to steer, in the right direction, and avoid obstacles, but they also have to perform additional tasks on arrival, e.g. fire-fighting. Speed, direction and velocity have to be carefully monitored, often from a remote position or by preprogramming.

摘要:
This article reviews certain strategic research issues that arise during work on advanced software for intelligent engineering support systems. The application focus concerns discrete devices and mechanisms drawn from electrical and mechanical engineering. The tasks of design and diagnosis are taken as key areas for the exploitation of artificial intelligence research. A brief discussion of the limitations of existing technology introduces some fundamental issues that current and future research must examine in order to produce intelligent design and diagnosis tools for the future.

摘要:
With the increasing use of computer systems in safety-critical applications, there is an imperative for their developers to be more aware of their responsibilities, to employ improved methods of development, to acquire new technologies more rapidly, and to introduce standards into their industries. In response to these needs, there have been numerous initiatives taken by government departments, standards bodies, and professional institutions; one of these has been the inception of a Club for the safety-critical community. This article reviews the safety-critical software scene, briefly discusses the technology and the recent initiatives, and introduces the Safety-Critical Systems Club.

摘要:
This article reports on the design and implementation of a Computer-Aided Die Design System (CADDS) for sheet-metal blanks. The system is designed by considering several factors, such as the complexity of blank geometry, reduction in scrap material, production requirements, availability of press equipment and standard parts, punch profile complexity, and tool elements manufacturing method. The interaction among these parameters and how they affect designers' decision patterns is described. The system is implemented by interfacing AutoCAD with the higher level languages FORTRAN 77 and AutoLISP. A database of standard die elements is created by parametric programming, which is an enhanced feature of AutoCAD. The greatest advantage achieved by the system is the rapid generation of the most efficient strip and die layouts, including information about the tool configuration.

摘要:
The advent of three-dimensional computer graphics has allowed the use of the computer as a computer-aided engineering tool to analyse the design of mechanical components. In this case study, a stop mount, which is a component used in the tape drive, is analysed because of its frequent breakage during assembly. Following the modelling, meshing and analysis of the original design of the stop mount, the problem was identified. Two alternative designs were evaluated through the same procedures. One design was eventually recommended. Following this recommendation, the company has since changed the design of the stop mount. The result is a new design that not only solved the breakage problem, but also holds a torque of 5.5-6.5 Ibf/in as opposed to the old design's torque of 1.5-2.0 Ibf/in.
