摘要:
The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of South Africa (Unisa—a distance teaching university) has, over the years, been struggling with the twin problems of lack of staff and a difficult subject to teach adequately using only the traditional medium (the written or printed word) employed at Unisa. The article describes the rationale for choosing computer-aided instruction (CAI) to address both problems.

摘要:
When deciding to develop and use computer-assisted instruction (CAI) within a distance education environment, there are a number of constraints that must be kept in mind. In the article limitations on CAI and distance teaching in general and specific problems encountered in using CAI in the distance education environment are discussed. CAI can help to eliminate some weaknesses of distance education in general; on the other hand, distance education as such can place more constraints on CAI.

摘要:
This article describes the computer-assisted instruction (CAI) model used for the development of courseware that forms part of the tutorial package for the computer concepts course at the University of South Africa. The courseware design model which was followed consisted of five phases: preparation for the project, predesign, design, programming and formative evaluation, and summative evaluation.

摘要:
During 1989 a new course on computer concepts was approved at the University of South Africa. It was decided to use a new approach to the teaching-at-a-distance education environment by introducing a multimedia teaching package for this course on computer concepts for computer users. The contents of the course and the reasons for having such a course are described in the article, together with the tutorial package for the course, the administrative arrangements made for the presentation of the course and a presentation of the authors' findings during the first year of operation of the course.

摘要:
The distance education University of South Africa has included a computer-assisted instruction package as part of its computer concepts course. A computerised package is used to set up banks of short questions, selections of which are presented to the student as a self-test. The package has been well received by students.

摘要:
The J. Stefan Institute in Ljubljana has developed a microcomputer-based multiloop controller MMC-90, which is, on the one hand, aimed at scientific research work, i.e. the study of the most modern techniques of control and, on the other hand, aimed at solving actual industrial problems. A program environment has been made, which allows design, simulation and automatic coding of control structures for this controller as well as other programmable microcomputer controllers (computer-aided control engineering method). The MMC-90 controller has already performed two interesting applications. The combustion control in a steam boiler PK-401 in Cinkarna Celje has been realised. Besides numerous other positive effects, 4% fuel has also been saved and ecological conditions have been greatly improved.

摘要:
It is often said that software reuse requires changes in traditional software development processes. This article looks at the changes that might be required in the software industry itself if it is to be based on software reuse. We begin by introducing software communities and software clearing houses as the context for large-scale reuse of software components. We next look at issues associated with the packaging, distribution and validation of components. Because software for reuse and proprietary software are somewhat contradictory, we discuss marketing and pricing approaches that attempt to reconcile their opposing requirements. We discuss various forms that software companies may take in an environment of large-scale reuse and look at programmes, such as the European Software and Systems Initiative,1that may have an impact on the formation of such environments.

摘要:
Sterilisation of oil palm fruits is the first step in the sequence processes to extract the oil. It is typically a batch process, using steam for heating or ‘cooking’ the fruits. Sterilisation is carried in a way which requires the proper sequencing of valve movements for deaeration, steam inputs, steam blow-offs and condensate removal. Since a palm oil mill normally has multiple sterilisers, the task is to ensure the proper sequencing of all the associated valves. In this review, the sterilisation process is taken as a case in the study of automation in a palm oil mill. This article discusses the sterilisation process in the palm oil mill and elaborates on the control requirements. It also examines the features of some installed systems.
