摘要:
Neural networks are enjoying a recent renewal of interest in their uses and applications. This article discusses possible reasons behind this apparent rediscovery, briefly outlining the history of neural networks and focusing on their current applications. The basic building blocks in a neural network are examined, its learning capabilities illustrated and its architectures described. Possible applications of currently available neural networks are presented for typical process control tasks, and future developments in this area are suggested.

摘要:
This article describes privately funded work carried out by SD-Scicon UK Ltd. on the use of neural networks for time series prediction. The advantages of a neural approach are discussed, and some possible back propagation architectures described. Detailed evaluation is made of one particular architecture, based on a fully connected recurrent network. The network has been evaluated for both deterministically and stochastically generated time series, as well as real process data. Results are presented for the latter, and comparisons made with the performance achieved by a bespoke Kalman filter. The article also discusses the use of a ‘spread encoding’ scheme for representing input and output data, which enables the network to learn local linearisations on the input data and allows for probabilistic interpretation of the output data.

摘要:
‘Hype’ has played a significant role in the history of artificial neural network research. Unsubstantiated promises are always detrimental to research. Unfortunately, they remain at the forefront of the subject area. It is our contention that only through industrial application will the true prestige of the technology be realised. To this end, an international industrial Artificial Neural Network Club was established jointly between the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, and the University of Maryland, USA. In this article, application areas where specific industrial benefits have been achieved are highlighted, and potential for future developments considered.

摘要:
This article updates an earlier one; it describes the architecture, facilities and usage of the London University Interactive Video Network (LIVE-NET), which connects a number of sites in the University. The extension of the reach of the network by use of a direct broadcast satellite is described. The article discusses how the video facilities are being supplemented by interactive digital services, how packet video is being used to link the network to others in the USA, and how the system could be extended to embrace a larger catchment area. Finally, the article considers the administrative support which is provided to assist operations.

摘要:
This article is based on a speech the author made at the third annual conference of Survive! on the 6th November 1991, and while some things have progressed and others evolved since then (and further details may have changed since the recent General Election), the main points made then are as relevant now as they were then.

摘要:
We used to think of a business disaster as the inferno, tempest or flood that destroyed buildings, equipment and records vital to the running of a company. Of course, such disasters still happen, but an increasing number—indeed the majority—of disasters are less physical and more subtle.

摘要:
The article describes the ‘Siberia’ project, which is being developed at the Computing Centre of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This project has a pragmatic and a research objective. The pragmatic objective is the creation of a high-performance computer system (HCS) intended for the operation of the supercomputing centre for global simulation and large-scale computation. The research objective is the investigation of ways to develop open general-purpose parallel systems of special-purpose parallel components. The latter should be a basis for operational design, development or adaptation of scalable problem-oriented systems. The concepts of large-block system design, sustaining multiple hardware paradigms, multiple software models, as well as existing languages and environments, are considered. The architecture and software of the HCS are presented. Topics for possible research co-operation are emphasised.

摘要:
In Japan, robotics research utilises technology advancements and stimulates research, in many areas. Present research aims to increase robot intelligence and reduce manipulator size, in some cases to almost molecular proportions.
