摘要:
Software engineering has made significant contributions to ‘engineering-in-the-large’. The nature of the software process has been researched, and computer-based tools and environments have been built to support this process. Other more established engineering disciplines, such as instrument design, have developed professional practices, mature mathematical frameworks for system modelling and accepted quality standards lacking in software engineering. Little effort, however, has been devoted to the cross-fertilisation of software engineering and engineering design, or indeed the exploitation of the frequently observed commonalities between them. The Software Engineering and Engineering Design (SEED) project described in this article has attempted to address these issues through the study of heterogeneous, composite systems. This has resulted in a model of the engineering design process, an organisational framework for systems development methodology and integrated computer-based support for this framework.

摘要:
This article describes an approach to the design of object systems within a CIM environment. Current CIM systems are based on organisational decomposition, where software modules are developed to correspond to existing enterprise management structures. Using an object environment, enterprise resources can be presented as virtual models. This allows a functional decomposition, resulting in the requirement for a Command, Control and Communication (C3) module. In order to successfully implement an integrated enterprise environment using a resource-based architecture the consistency design principle was developed where each resource is responsible for its own actions. The C3design resulting from this concept demonstrates generic mechanisms, configured by data, with minimum code.

摘要:
In this article we describe Prelude, a programming language and accompanying system support for writing portable parallel programs for multiprocessor architectures. Prelude allows the programmer to separate the description of the computation to be performed by a program from the description of how that computation is to be mapped onto a machine. This makes it easier to tune the performance of a program on a particular machine and also simplifies porting a program to new architectures.

摘要:
Burning a fossil fuel produces heat and combustion residues. In a power generation plant boiler, for example, some of this heat is transferred from the furnace side, through the boiler tubes, into the water side. The heated water is converted into steam, which in turn drives the turbines and generators in order to produce electrical power. This process, and its inherent inefficiencies, is well understood. However, the other product of burning, namely the combustion residues, will affect this process. It is a consideration of the current status, as well as ongoing research into the monitoring and control of these residues, that form the basis for this article.
