&NA;This bibliography is compiled by anaesthesiologists from the journals listed at the end of this publication. It is based on literature entered into our database between 1 May 1995 and 30 April 1996 (articles are generally added to the database about two and a half months after publication). In addition, the bibliography contains every paper annotated by reviewers; these references were obtained from a variety of bibliographic databases and published between the beginning of the review period and the time of going to press. The bibliography has been grouped into topics that relate to the reviews in this issue.

&NA;The papers selected for this review on depth of anaesthesia concentrate on some of the recent developments in understanding the mechanisms of consciousness and memory. This is because of the profound effects of low doses of general anaesthetics on working memory. The likelihood of implicit memory of intra‐operative events is still being debated, one of the reasons for disagreement being the lack of an objective measure of depth of anaesthesia. A number of recent reports are included on the use of the electroencephalogram to measure depth of anaesthesia. The auditory evoked potential and bispectral analysis are currently the most widely used methods, and these are discussed in this review.

&NA;Although closed‐loop systems have a long tradition in engineering, their continued use for patients care is limited to the last 20 years, with the exception of Bickford's pioneering work in 1950. During the past 2 years it has been shown that automated closed‐loop systems for drug delivery can provide unique study designs for clinical research allowing experimental set‐ups not realisable by traditional means. It is, however, evident that a lot of research and development has to be done on therapeutic closed‐loop systems to solve the many questions related to reliability and safety the use of therapeutic closed systems in the routine clinical setting imposes on an automatic system.

&NA;The new inhalational anaesthetics, sevoflurane and particularly desflurane, appear favourable for day‐case surgery owing to their rapid pharmacokinetic properties. However, toxicity with sevoflurane and sympathetic stimulating effects with desflurane limit their applicability. No new intravenous agents have been developed recently, but new conceptual ideas improve dosing, and the new opioid remifentanil improves control.

&NA;The &agr;2‐adrenoceptor agonists have several beneficial actions during the perioperative period. They exert a central sympatholytic action, improving haemodynamic stability in response to endotracheal intubation and surgical stress, reducing the anaesthetic and opioid requirements and causing sedation, anxiolysis and analgesia. Furthermore, &agr;2‐adrenoceptor agonists may offer benefits in the prophylaxis and treatment of perioperative myocardial ischaemia. The development of new, highly selective compounds that not only reduce anaesthetic requirements but induce anaesthesia by themselves may provide a new concept for the administration of anaesthesia.

&NA;Several metanalyses indicate that complications in the postoperative care unit remain significant concerns. Nausea and vomiting are common. Identification of susceptible patients and prophylaxis are superior to treatment. Hemodynamic changes cannot always be predicted. New onset cardiac dysrhythmias may indicate myocardial ischemia. Pulmonary complications after major abdominal surgery are reduced if epidural rather than parenteral opioid analgesia is employed. Hypothermia must be recognized and corrected quickly to prevent serious complications including delayed wound healing.
