摘要:
Parkinson's disease is one of a group of extra pyramidal diseases characterized by rigidity and tremor. The disease affects about 1 million persons in this country, and is most common in persons older than 55. Parkinson's is disabling and usually progresses from mild to severe, often in less than a decade, and may preclude an individual from accomplishing many activities of daily living, even with current drug therapy. In addition to problems caused by age, dental complications arise from the inability of the individual with Parkinson's to accomplish routine oral hygiene, from changes in salivary flow and due to dysfunction in swallowing. Dental management of individuals with Parkinson's is a multifaceted challenge involving areas of preventive, restorative, and prosthetic dentistry. Support is also required for the psychosocial and behavioral aspects of this common progressive disorder.

摘要:
The following report was presented during the October regional meeting of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry in Washington, DC. The needs for dentists who specialize in geriatric dentistry and dental curriculum in geriatrics are discussed, together with issues that face dental educators in geriatric dentistry.SummaryAging of the population presents a special challenge to dentists, considering that 75%of the patients that current students will treat at the height of their dental careers will be 65 or older. Students must be taught the difference between oral health care for older persons and such care for younger persons. They must understand the physical, social, and behavioral changes that are often combined with debilitating effects of acute and chronic diseases in older persons. The needs to increase the number of advanced training programs in geriatric dentistry, upgrade undergraduate geriatric curriculum, and stimulate research to enhance the quality of life of older persons have been the focal points here.

摘要:
Successful management of hospital dental programs and general practice residencies is challenging in this era of cost containment. The efforts of two hospitals to strengthen their dental departments through greater efficiency of operation, cost controls, and improvements in a general practice residency program are described.
