摘要:
SUMMARYThe deaf population requires special treatment in the dental office. Virtually all published articles in the literature about dental treatment for these persons are reviewed. This population is one of several populations having limited access to care as identified by the ADA. A course developed to address the special needs of persons who are hearing impaired is described. Definitions of persons who are hearing impaired, education of deaf persons, psychosocial aspects of deafness, aids to communication, the deaf community, sign language, and interpreting and interpreters are topics discussed here that will improve dentists' service to deaf persons. The dental professional has the privilege of providing care to all Americans and the hearing‐impaired population has been identified as one having special treatment needs. After exposure to this information, dental students and dentists should become more aware of, and seek more information pertaining to the special needs of deaf persons. It is further hoped that they will make the modifications necessary to accommodate deaf persons as patient

摘要:
SUMMARYThe ability of the dental delivery system to provide the older population with preventive and periodontal care now and in the future is examined. Identification of the structural barriers to obtaining this care suggests public policy recommendations aimed at increasing the older adult's dental health status.

摘要:
SUMMARYA method of fabricating complete dentures in children using individually carved teeth according to the vertical dimension of occlusion and centric relation is described. This method is preferred to stock teeth and can help to achieve good function and esthetic appearance. If the other factors are satisfactory, the adaptation is easy and fast.

摘要:
SUMMARYEighty‐three national and 65 local advocacy groups for handicapped persons were surveyed by questionnaire. National groups described financial obstacles as primary barriers to care, whereas local groups described difficulty in performing oral care procedures as primary barriers to dental care. Both national and local groups were interested in dental involvement, although they differed in prior involvement with dental health matters. Dental information and speakers at programs were cited as ways to increase dental inpu

摘要:
SUMMARYA total of 43 patients with muscular dystrophy of the Duchenne type were separated into the three groups by calendar and dental age. Oral examinations, questionnaires, and observations of dental behavior were recorded to propose a dental health management program for the particular problems associated with these patients. Three general conclusions were drawn from this study.

摘要:
SUMMARYSocietal and cultural factors influence the use of professional services by older black Americans. The objective of this study was to examine societal determinants that influence culturally learned behavior manifested by a selected group of older black Americans.A variation on the Health Belief Model was used as the primary tool of data collection with 122 black Americans age 55 to 97. The belief index was divided into four major categories: caries; perceived susceptibility to dental caries; perceived severity of dental caries; and perceived benefits of preventive action.Although evidence supported the relationship between economics and the utilization of dental services for this population, evidence also suggested that dental help‐seeking behavior appears to be independent of income. The study suggests that a case can be made linking the health beliefs of this population with their dental practice. It is certain that the multifaceted nature of the sociocultural environment does have an impact on the dental health of this older black American populatio

摘要:
SUMMARYThe need to establish guidelines for granting privileges to dentists to perform the history and physical examination of record on their hospitalized patients has been precipitated by a recent change in the New York State Health Code. These guidelines will help hospital credential committees faced with requests from dentists who desire these privileges and help dentists to develop and undertake training programs that will bring them to the “qualified” level. This paper offers a set of minimum standards for determining competency in performing history and physical examinations that can also be used for training in the area. Length and timing of the curriculum was not discus
