摘要:
The partial molar free energy of aluminum in β‐NiAl intermetallic compounds was determined from 41.3 to 67.8 at.% nickel in the temperature range from 788 to 1005°C by an EMF method. The partial molar free energy and enthalpy of nickel, the mixing free energy and enthalpy and the free energy of formation of the different compounds in the Ni‐Al‐system were calculated.

摘要:
The CCT diagrams of three medium‐carbon steels without and with microalloying by vanadium and titanium were constructed by applying direct cooling of as‐deformed austenite. Deformation parameters corresponding to those of industrial forging were varied with a laboratory simulation technique by using the plane strain hot compression test. The effect of microalloying, deformation, and deformation temperature on the amount of structural substituents was quantified. For practical application of the study the as‐forged controlled cooling conditions were determined to achieve the desired bainite‐free ferritic‐pearlitic microstructure with beneficial mechanical properties.

摘要:
The conditions for ferrite and pearlite banding in strip and plate made of structural steels were investigated. Factors found to influence the formation of banded structures were the cooling rate during the γ/α‐transformation, the former austenite grain size, and the work‐hardened condition of the former austenite. Analyses with the aid of an electron beam microprobe made it possible to demonstrate that the carbon‐rich bands correspond locally with banded manganese enrichments, yet that they do not form before the course of the γ/α‐transformation as a result of secondary segregation. It was possible to explain the mechanism of action of the influencing factors on the basis of this model.

摘要:
The microstructures of three steels with about 0.35% C, 10% Mn and 13% Cr were investigated. After homogenization treatment, all steels have an austenitic microstructure with some carbide precipitates. During cooling to −196°C as well as by plastic deformation ε‐martensite and α‐martensite are formed. The influence of the degree of deformation at different temperatures on microstructure and stability of austenite is described in detail. This information will be used to find a microstructure optimized to have a high cavitation resistance.

摘要:
Interstitial nitrogen considerably improves the corrosion resistance of low‐tempered martensitic stainless steels. It may be introduced into the bulk by pressure melting or powder metallurgy and into a surface layer by case hardening. The new high‐nitrogen steels (HNS) are suitable for stainless tools and bearings.High‐tempered HNS are outstanding due to a fine dispersion of stable nitrides, which improve the hot and short time creep strength as well as the toughness. This may be used in hot‐work tooling. Long time testing will have to prove whether HNS offer advantages in fossile power plants.

Martensite formation is characterized by a diffusionless structural phase transformation from austenite to martensite, associated with a considerable amount of lattice variant shear γγα≍ 0.2. Ferrous martensite shows all possible features connected with the transformation. Different modes of initiation of the martensite formation are possible. The reasons for the burst phenomenon can be considered as an analogy to discontinuous yielding. The transformation only procedes if further thermodynamical driving force is provided by cooling or shear stress. In some cases fractal microstructures are formed in which several fragmentations can be recognized. In contrast to shape memory alloys, steels usually do not show reversibility of the reverse α → γ transformation. The factors which favour reversibility have been defined. Knowledge of these is necessary for the development of iron‐base shape‐memory alloys.

Thermo‐calc computations have been made for the iron‐rich corner of the system Fe‐Cr‐Mo‐W‐V‐C to obtain phase equilibria for AISI M2 high‐speed steel (German designation S‐6‐5‐2). The calculations describe the main transformation temperatures of this steel with good accuracy. The phases which are present during austenitization and their volume fractions are also correctly accounted for. The solidification sequence of the M2 steel, and in particular the occurrence of M2C in the ledeburitic eutectic, can be explained if the segregation of alloying elements and carbon in the interdendritic spaces is taken into account. The secondary hardening precipitates can be described in satisfactory approximation on the basis of local two‐phase equilibria between each carbide and the matrix, indicating that their compositions are essentially determined by the nucleation process.

Ductile fracture of metallic materials can be described by void nucleation, growth and coalescence. The first coalescence of voids defines crack initiation. A quantitative description of material damage by the means of continuum‐mechanics is a very current theme. Using Gurson's model and the yield equation modified by Needleman and Tvergaard a quantitative description of damage condition is possible by connecting stress triaxiality and void volume fraction. In this paper failure curves, in which the effective plastic strain is plotted as a function of stress triaxiality, will be generated by a new yield equation, which is a further development of the Gurson model. The failure curves will be shown for crack initiation and other damage situations. An advantage of the further developed yield equation, compared with the conventional one, can be seen in the fact that not one constant, which is independent of the material, but several material specific values are used. These values can be determined by density measurements at different void volume fractions. The procedure for determination of failure curves will be shown and subsequently test results will be discussed.
