Starting with the demonstration of the equivalent behaviour of solutes in case of the solubility and the activity of nitrogen and hydrogen in iron, cobalt and nickel base ternary and multicomponent melts, it has been shown that the equivalence principle, which was proved for the solvents iron, cobalt and nickel earlier on, is also valid among these solvents. Therefore, common reference functions have to be introduced for the evaluation of the solubility of nitrogen and hydrogen respectively. The influence of the solutes on the solubility of gaseous components nitrogen and hydrogen is uniformly graduated in the three solvents iron, cobalt and nickel. That means there must exist a valid common basic systematic. The different courses of the isothermal saturation curves can be explained by different miscibility in the liquid and the solid state of the metallic components solvent and solute as well. Based on this systematic background, it can be shown that the relation between the ordinal numbers of the solutes and their equivalence factors is directly linear within the individual element groups.

By use of the hot deformation simulator (Wumsi) the plane strain hot compression test permits the simulation of hot forming processes up to a logarithmic strain of 2.5, whereby the cooling rate of the specimen after the deformation can be varied within a wide range. By employing a recently developed method the (residual) strengtheningSof austenite is determined during any anisothermal deformation sequence by evaluating the flow curves. In this way the effectiveS‐value, corresponding to the transformation start, can be established. In order to determine the transformation temperatures, the stored cooling curves are differentiated numerically, whereafter the transformation temperatures are marked on each cooling curve. Such marked cooling curves are plotted on a graph with zero time taken as the moment of crossing the A3temperature. The transformation lines can be traced through the markings, so that a complete continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram of a steel after a simulated hot deformation schedule can be obtained directly on the screen of a graphic terminal.

Deformation texture of 90% cold rolled iron of various purities was studied by pole figure measurements from which complete orientation distribution functions ODF were calculated using series expansion including the zero range method. The texture type consists of two mutually perpendicular orientation tubes which can be idealized as (110)//RD and (111)//ND in accordance with microstructural investigations which revealed two types of microstructures corresponding to these idealized fibres. The intensity superposition of the two fibres yields a maximum density in slightly deviating positions especially in the vicinity of the intersection of the two tubes which may be idealized as (110) 30° ND fibre component. The texture of the high‐purity iron is nearest to the (111)//ND fibre. Within this general texture type, two subtypes can be distinguished corresponding to high‐purity iron on the one hand and the low‐purity materials on the other. The texture of the high‐purity iron at 90% of deformation still corresponds to the low‐degree type of the lower‐purity materials which is attributed to the occurrence of dynamic recovery in the high‐purity iron.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of grain size, regulated by means of austenitizing temperature, on the process of hot‐work tool steel cracking. Fracture toughness (Klc) of this steel depended on the ratio of the average linear intercept of grain (L̄) and the diameter of the plastic strain zone formed ahead of the propagating crack (dy). Investigations were supplemented by the fractographic analysis. The dependence of theKlcone the ratioL̄:dyhas been confirmed. In the subcritical range, whenL̄:dy1, grain growth resulting from the increase of austenitizing temperature causes stoppage of the decrease of fracture toughness and can even lead to increase. Thus, tools requiring the highest hardness can be quenched from possibly high temperatures without fear of any disadvantageous influence upon the toughness of even a strong grain growth. In the critical range, whenL̄:dy≈1, fracture toughness of tool steel reached minimum.

The aim of these investigations was first of all to evaluate the fracture toughness (Klc) changes of the hot‐work tool steels depending on the non‐metallic inclusions (NMI) volume fraction (melting technology). The tests were carried out on two types of the hot‐work tool steels, i. e. H13 and H11 according to AISI. As a result of these investigations, supplemented by the detailed fractographic analysis, it has been revealed that uniform arrangement of NMI in the structure can be considered as harmless for the fracture toughness of tool steels. At high steel hardness values, the NMI, because of their action with a very small plastic strain zone, can be treated as natural obstacles in the crack propagation. At low hardness values of tool steels, achieved as a result of tempering at high temperatures, the role of NMI in the process of crack formation of these steels is limited by carbides precipitated from martensite. The micro‐voids are formed round these carbides, which, connecting earlier than the voids formed round NMI, set the path of cracking and determine the steel fracture toughness.
