摘要:
Induction smelting process, ISP, is a direct smelting process in which self‐fluxed composite pellets (made of iron ore, brown coal and lime) are melted in a single phase induction furnace in conjunction with top blown oxygen. A mass transfer model to predict the concentration of iron oxide, has been developed for this process. Transient mass balance equation with complex boundary conditions has been worked out by adopting a relatively new approach known as the cell model approach. These equations have been solved numerically using finite difference technique to obtain the iron oxide concentration profile in the induction smelting process. Numerical and experimental results obtained for the iron oxide concentration show a reasonable agreement with each other.

摘要:
The thermodynamic expressions used to express the nitrogen concentration in iron based alloys prepared under high pressure requires the explicit use of pressure terms. The nitrogen concentration follows Sievert's law for low alloy additions, but significant deviations are observed at higher alloy additions. This Bureau of Mines study extends these new thermodynamic results to higher pressures (200 MPa) and to a greater range of iron alloys: Fe‐(0‐30)Cr‐(0‐30)Mn‐(0‐30)Ni. The experimental results also show that pressure‐alloy concentration effects exist.

摘要:
It is possible to build a radiation cell which allows the investigation of thin molten salt layers. One may draw conclusions from the infrared emission spectra to the structure of molten salts. The influence of different cations on the structure of silicate melts both in and near the molten state is detectable. The existence of free O2−‐ions is not necessary for the description of the properties of a silicate slag. The basicity of a slag depends on the strength of the bond of the oxygen ions to the silicate network. The basicity of a molten silicate melt can be determined by the use of infrared emission spectroscopy.

摘要:
This paper deals with oxidation protection afforded to carbon‐containing refractory materials by boron carbide. Following the previous tests on the stability of B4C at high temperatures and on the microstructural characteristics of a fired MgO‐C brick, now the reactions, which are to be expected in the interior of the brick, in a neutral atmosphere are discussed. The results of the theoretical consideration and the experiments carried out provide evidence that MgO is unstable in the presence of boron carbide as from approx. 1300°C. Similar instability is shown by magnesium borate, which is reduced by carbon as from about 1300°C. In both reactions, reactive gases occur (Mg vapour and B2O2), which prevent its ingress and hence oxidation of the carbon by binding the oxygen. As well as the dense layer of borate melt on the brick surface, this phenomenon is obviously responsible for the high efficiency of the boron carbide as an antioxidant for MgO‐C materials.

摘要:
Several tests of water cooling of steel samples are presented in the paper. The water spray and quenching conditions are considered. The temperature variations during the tests are monitored using the thermocouples embedded in the side of the samples. The experimental time – temperature profiles are compared with the results of calculations based on the finite element model. Comparison of the theoretical and experimental results allowed to suggest heat transfer coefficients of 10000 W/m2K for water in quenching, 6000 W/m2K for the top surface during water spray cooling and 4000 W/m2K for the bottom surface during water spray cooling.

摘要:
Tensile properties and formability of type 304 stainless steel sheets which were cast by a twin‐roll type strip caster and thereafter cold‐rolled are examined and compared with those of conventionally processed sheets. The results exhibit that the strip casting processed sheets have mechanical properties almost equal to the conventional ones. Furthermore, it is found that the degree of plastic anisotropy caused by crystallographic anisotropy in the present sheets is weaker than that in the conventional ones.

摘要:
A series of six Cr‐, Cr + Mo‐, Cr + Mo + V cold work cast tool steels were produced and investigated for microstructure, impact toughness and both experimental and industrial abrasive wear. Grain refinement of the steel matrix even in as‐cast condition was obtained on using 2.3 % Mo + 0.9 % V and that ensured increasing impact toughness and abrasion resistance. An optimum impact toughness of about 85 J‐cm−2was obtained in air quenched (970°C) and tempered (450°C) Mo + V containing steels in which area fraction of carbides reached 38 %. The abrasion resistance improved in case of steels tempered at 250°C and had fine grain structure.
