Seven industrial doloma refractory samples, coming from three European suppliers, and with different carbon, or graphite, or binder content, are subjected to the action of a slag required for the desulfurization of the steel in the secondary metallurgy at 1600°C. Three tests have been carried out within two induction furnaces. The corrosion depth, at the slag‐steel interface, has been measured; the graphite‐containing samples display a better resistance than the graphite‐free pitch or resin‐bonded refractories. Among the graphite‐containing samples correlations have been found with the carbon content and with the resistance to oxidation by CO–CO2at 1100–1200°C. The slag‐refractory interface has been investigated by X‐ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron microprobe analysis; the observed phases are CaO, MgO, Ca2SiO4, Ca3SiO5and Ca12Al14O33(outside graphite and iron). The corrosion mechanism is linked to the reaction of slag with lime, followed by infiltration of the refractory and dispersion of periclase grains in the slag.

A mathematical model of the electro‐reductionfurnace process (ERF process), for the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, has been tested at Larco's metallurgical plant at Larymna Greece. The theoretical predictions for the progress of the nickel reduction have been compared with the operational results. The tests were carried out in the ERF no. 2 of Larco's plant. The influence of the main process variables on the nickel recovery and nickel losses in the ERF slags have been investigated in conjunction with the variation of the analysis of the feed and the nickel content of the metal bath. The further application of the model to the metallurgical practice is discussed. According to the predictions of the model the further development of the process in the direction of the production of low‐nickel ferronickel (Ni<15%) is analyzed. The advantages of the production of low‐nickel ferronickel are presented and the possibility of its straight conversion to nickel‐bearing steel‐grades is discussed.

摘要:
An existing thermomechanical finite‐element model of the hot rolling process is used to simulate the structure evolution in the strip. The equations which describe the grain‐size variations during the hot deformation are implemented in the model. The local values of temperatures, strain rates and strains are used in calculations, allowing the determination of the grain‐size distribution across the strip. The results of calculations carried out for the seven‐stand hot‐strip mill are presented in this paper.

The magnetic properties of non‐oriented magnetic steel are specified at a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. The effect of increasing the frequency of the magnetizing field upon the specific total loss, the field strength and the specific apparent power is demonstrated. Regarding the non‐oriented steel at 50 Hz total loss comprises mainly hysteresis loss, whereas the eddy‐current loss of most of the grades amounts to less than 40%. The approximately square increase of the eddy‐current loss with frequency means that at 400 Hz the total loss is determined by the resistivity. For excitations up to a peak polarization of 1.6 T increasing sheet thickness results in an increasing field strength at 400 Hz. While at 50 Hz low‐alloyed grades have a lower field strength above 1.3 T, at 400 Hz the field strength of the high‐alloyed grades is more favourable up to 1.4 T. With respect to the apparent power, the square of which is proportional to the copper losses, there is an advantage of the higher alloyed grades up to 1.5 T.

An examination has been made of the effect of increasing polyalkylene glycol concentration on the generation of thermal stress and strain in steel plates of a high hardenability steel 835M30, using a viscoelastic‐plastic mathematical model. The results obtained from these quenched specimens suggest that the residual stresses and strains were not greatly affected by concentrations of the proprietary Aquaquench 1250 within the range 5% to 25%, although the addition of up to 5% of this solution did markedly reduce the residual stress and strain. At the same time the reduction in the Aquaquench 1250 from 25% to 5% greatly reduced the duration of the vapour blanket stage of the quench, so it might be possible to produce a fully martensite structure in a lower hardenability steel without adversively affecting the level of stress and strain at the end of the quench.

摘要:
The effect of niobium on hot ductility of low C‐Mn steel under continuous casting simulation conditions in the range from 700°C to 1 000°C was investigated on a Gleeble‐1500 tester by using in‐situ melting and solidification method. It was found that the ductility trough becomes deeper and wider as Nb content increases. The steel has more refined structure and is more sensitive to interdendritic fracture as Nb content gets higher. The segregation of impurities or alloy elements and formation of sulphides and Nb‐compounds in the interdendritic regions promote the interdendritic fracture.
