AbstractThe EPR spectra of several aqueous solutions of mixtures of hydrophobic species such as t‐butanol or Bu4NBr with a nitroxide free radical probe 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐4‐piperidone‐N‐oxide have been analyzed in an attempt to learn about the local effects produced by hydrophobic solutes on the water structure and about the dynamics of the interactions among hydrophobic particles in water. Effects characteristic of hydrophobic interactions are identified by comparison of the spectra with those of solutions of the probe in aqueous glycerol at the same viscosity. The probe studied here exhibits several interesting effects which may be associated with its interaction with clusters of hydrophobic species but seems less sensitive to the effects of pair interaction with a single other hydrophobic particle, except perhaps the io

AbstractThe kinetic parameters of the internal rotation about the amino nitrogen‐ring carbon bond in N‐R‐2,4,6‐trinitroanilines with\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm R = n - C}_{\rm 3} {\rm H}_{\rm 7} {\rm , n - C}_{\rm 4} {\rm H}_{\rm 9} {\rm , n - C}_{\rm 6} {\rm H}_{{\rm 13}} {\rm , and n - C}_{\rm 8} {\rm H}_{{\rm 17}} $$\end{document}in dichloromethane at temperatures between 25° and –80°C were determined by comparison of measured and calculated complete NMR line shapes. It was found that the height of the barrier to internal rotation is constant within the above class of compounds in concert with a previous model, and that the frequency of jumping over the barrier only slightly decreases with increasing chain length of the n‐alkyl substituents as estimated for n‐alkyl chains moving freel

摘要:
AbstractExamples are given of the influence of a strong externally applied electric field on NMR spectra. From these measurements the molecular alignment, induced by the electric field, can be obtained. The alignment does not only depend on the molecular dipolemoment and polarizability, but also on angular correlations between the molecules in the liquid. For acetonitrile the intermolecular short range interactions have been found to be of limited importance. This is contrary to the situation in liquid nitrobenzene.

AbstractThe ESR linewidths in solutions of K3W(CN)8and K3Mo(CN)8were measured as a function of temperature and viscosity in various solvents. In addition the14N NMR linewidths were measured in aqueous solutions of K4Mo(CN)8as a function of the temperature. The results were interpreted using two approaches (a) The theory due to Kivelson and McClung [4], and (b) Attempting to obtain the best fit to a parametric equation in τCand τN, the correlation times for reorientation and angular momentum respectively. The model of Hubbard fails to account for the experimental results. The introduction of a temperature independent parameter κ, as suggested by Kivelson and coworkers, only partly improves the fit between experiment and theory. The correlation times, τc, derived from NMR measurements are in reasonable agreement with those obtained from ESR d
