AbstractThe essential aspects of a microscopic description of atomic liquids are reviewed, with emphasis on geometric features of the hard sphere model assembly. Before dealing with some microscopic modifications caused by the non‐spherical symmetry of polyatomic molecules, the deviations of molecular liquids from the law of corresponding states are discussed. Then the influences of electric moments are considered in some detail, especially the interference between effects of dipole moments, quadrupole moments and anisotropic molecular shape. AbstractBy Fourier decomposition of the appropriate fluctuation it is possible within the regime of linear response to extend the concept of both thermo‐dynamic quantities and transport coefficients to their dependence on both wavelength and frequency. Experimentally these generalized macroscopic properties are accessible through neutron diffraction and, as examples, the dependence of the sound speed on wavelength and the diffusion coefficient on time are discussed. Through the molecular dynamics computer method the dependence of the viscosity on wavelength is calculated and applied with spectacular success to predict the dependence of the friction coefficient on the size of a Brownian particle all the way to atomic dimensions. On the other hand, the dielectric constant continuum concept, as applied to a charge or dipole in a cavity, generally fails to predict even the correct field at large distance from the charge. Avoiding the introduction of a cavity cures that problem, but the generalized dielectric constant fails badly in predicting the field at shorter distances from the charg

AbstractConductance and thermodynamic properties are considered for several ionic systems continuously miscible from the fused salt to dilute solution in water or another polar solvent. Over most of the composition range, the activities of the respective components of the ionic systems show the same patterns of behavior and can be represented by the same equations that were developed for nonelectrolytes. Consideration is also given to ionic systems of large but finite solubility, including mixed electrolytes. The dominant factor in the behavior of these systems is the strength of ion solvation in competition with intermolecular forces in the solvent and direct interionic forces. Strong ion solvation yields negative deviations from ideal solution behavior and vice versa.

AbstractThis paper reviews the present position of statistical or molecular theory of simple liquids and their mixtures, with particular emphasis on the quantitative success of perturbation theories. It is shown that the limits to our present understanding are provided not so much by imperfections in the statistical mechanics as by our ignorance of the precise form and strength of the intermolecular potentials for all molecules except the noble gases and their mixtures.

AbstractThe general space‐time‐pair distribution functionG(RA(0), ΩA(0),RB(t), ΩB(t) plays an important role for the theoretical description of liquids. In this report first the relationship between the space‐time‐pair distribution function and static pair distribution functions, which characterize the liquid structure, and time correlation functions, which can be used to comprehend the dynamics of liquids, will be introduced. As an experimental method, which is particularly suited to determine the static pair distribution function, coherent neutron scattering is discussed. The power of this method for the determination of the liquid structure is demonstrated by considering the examples of a fused salt and a molecular liquid. For investigations of the dynamics of liquids incoherent neutron scattering and several spectroscopic experiments have been in use during the last few years. The relationship between these experiments and time correlation functions is presented. A discussion concerning the possibility to study translational and rotational dynamics by incoherent neutron scattering follows. Finally, by referring to a depolarized Rayleigh experiment, the relationship between spectroscopic experiments and orientational correlation functions, which describe the reorientational dynamics in liquids, is il
