摘要:
SUMMARYHigher education in the UK, with its current problems, faces further challenges in the decade ahead. This paper raises some critical issues concerning likely student demand, possible changes in the role of higher education, its financing in a period of economic sluggishness and the management of the system itself.

摘要:
SUMMARYA major objective of biological systematics is inferring phylogenies (evolutionary trees) from data on species. This involves inferring an unknown tree from data generated by a stochastic process operating along the tree. Statistical work on inferring phylogenies has concentrated on two cases: nucleic acid sequence data, modelled by a stochastic process with four discrete states, and gene frequency data, modelled by Brownian motion. A review of this work is presented. There are many unsolved problems, the most important of which is to persuade biologists to think of the problem of inferring phylogenies as being basically statistical, and to abandon deductive frameworks that are used as a justification for “parsimony” methods.

摘要:
SUMMARYThree estimators of the number of events missed in a dual record system of data collection are briefly reviewed. An empirical study by Chandrasekaran and Deming which compares the performance of their estimator with that of Greenfield is then considered and some further calculations on their data are presented.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe bases of statistical tables relating to offences and offenders are described. Some research into the processes behind the statistics is examined, and also the statistics of female offenders. Attitudes of the public, discretion of police officers and policy of Chief Constables, legislation and Government policy all affect the statistics. These factors are intrinsic to crime statistics, and to speak of “reducing the error” in the statistics is to oversimplify the problem.

摘要:
SUMMARYMortality statistics for the Jewish population of Great Britain for the period 1975–79 are described. Using these data, which are available for the deceased subdivided by age and sex, and information collected from surveys of various Jewish communities, indirect estimates of the population of British Jews are obtained. The results are described in some detail and suggest that British Jews in mid‐1977 numbered 336 000 (with an estimated error of 34 000). Inconsistencies in the data are discussed and the results are compared with the limited information available from other sources.

摘要:
SUMMARYThere has been a substantial amount of confusion in the statistical literature concerning the history of the classical time series of Zurich sunspot relative numbers. In this note, we briefly review the lives and work of J. R. Wolf (1816–93) and H. A. Wolfer (1854–1931), both of whom have been independently credited with the sunspot data, and assess the contribution made by each to the development of that data.
