SummaryA multiserver queueing system is considered. Customers arrive in groups at unit time intervals, there being a constant probability that a customer scheduled to arrive in fact does not do so. We calculate the probabilities that an arriving customer is subject to delay, and to delay of more than half a time unit. We then consider a second class of unscheduled customers who can be introduced into the system in accordance with various control rules. The emphasis is on the calculation of the server utilization and of the proportion of customers who can be scheduled when the probabilities of delay to scheduled customers are constrained to be small.

SummaryNon‐linear models are constructed to represent the mechanism by which consumers purchase a semi‐durable. The market shares are determined by advertising and distribution. Advertising expenditure in one time period has a reduced value at later times and the effectiveness is a non‐linear function of the expenditure, which can vary between brands. The differences between press and television advertising, a new product introduction and tied outlets are considered. Alternative models are developed and an increasing complexity evolves naturally as the predictions from a market mechanism are compared with the observations.

SummaryTwo batteries of psychological variables, as well as the usual indicators of academic ability, were measured on two separate samples of students at the University of Reading, and their relationship to performance in university examinations investigated. Principal component analysis was used to reveal the main components of the total variability in the samples. Association analysis and multiple regression techniques explored what information the variables contained that might be used for prediction of subsequent academic achievement. Although for the heterogeneous sample, level of performance at A‐level was predominantly the most useful single variable, its advantage tended to decrease when more homogeneous subgroups of the sample were examined. It was in all cases possible to improve greatly the proportion of variance explained by introducing other variables, both cognitive and non‐cognitive.The possible implications of this work on the selection of university students, and other uses of improved prediction, are discussed.

Foreword and SummaryThe aim of this paper is to review the role of statistics in the operation of that part of the United Kingdom insurance industry not concerned with life assurance.It might seem that adequate statistical investigation is essential to the successful conduct of insurance and that the records of insurance activities must provide adequate information on which to base premium rates. This is not, however, always the case. There are areas where statistics can only be collected after business has been transacted for some time, whilst records maintained primarily for the production of renewal notices and accounting purposes may be unsuitable for a technical statistical investigation. In life assurance there has been a close investigation over many years into the statistical basis of the business. Detailed records of illness and mortality have been kept and used in the calculation of premium rates and the estimation of profitability. This work has in the main been carried out by actuaries and has been fully documented, especially in theJournalof the Institute of Actuaries.In some other branches of United Kingdom insurance, however, actuaries have had much less influence and few mathematical statisticians appear to have been involved. The theoretical mathematical approach involving risk theory has been treated more extensively in the rest of Europe and parts of North America, but practical applications seem to involve many difficulties and the more empirical approach adopted in the United Kingdom has its attractions. However, it has become necessary in recent years to endeavour to match premium rates more closely to the risk by the subdivision of heterogeneous groups and, especially in motor insurance, this has involved a more detailed statistical investigation of the business.Much statistical work is now being undertaken both by the British Insurance Association and by some of the larger companies. As yet, however, few papers have been published on this work and it will therefore be necessary to treat some parts of the subject in more detail than their importance would otherwise warrant.The paper is divided into four sections: Introduction; principles of non‐life insurance; technical problems in non‐life insurance; conclusions.

SummaryThis paper utilizes previous results by Ehrenberg (1968) in order to reanalyse data on heights and weights of Ghanaian and expatriate children in the age group 5–18 in Ghana schools. The results show that Ehrenberg's lawlike weight/height relationship logẁ= 0·8h̀+ 0·4 holds for privileged Ghanaian children and expatriate children in Ghana, but that slight modification of the type logẁ= 0·8h̀+ 0·36 is required for the description of relationship between weight and height for rural and urban non‐privileged Ghanaian children. Ehrenberg's earlier results applied to apparentlywell‐fedchildren (and there was some reduction in weight for the presumably less well‐fed Hutu and Tutsi children in Rwanda). It is suggested that the general tendency for African boys not living in privileged urban or mining‐camp conditions to be consistently lighter in weight for a given height is probably related to nutritional standards.
