摘要:
SUMMARYSir John Herschel expressed an interest from time to time over a long period in a problem that would now be called statistical. He gave his own proof of a relevant probability distribution, introduced a bivariate version of the probable error and estimated this parameter from the proportion of observations within a circular area. When theory was applied to observation, he noticed thai estimates obtained from different concentric circles steadily increased with distance from the centre. Herschel suggested an explanation which is confirmed here.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe paper shows that decisions by school‐leavers about applying to university are influenced by the chance that an application would be successful. Two tests are offered. The first compares different school qualification categories within each year: the greater the success rate among applications in a category, the greater is the propensity of pupils in that category to apply. The second test is over time: Aggregate reduction in the number of university places in the early 1980s, relative to the number of qualified school‐leavers, is shown to be associated with a fall in the propensity to apply, even after account has been taken of changing levels of school qualifications and changing patterns of course taking. Gender, parental education and father's occupational class have relatively small residual effects on the propensity to apply (conditional on qualifications and course taking), and these effects do not change over time. Two main policy conclusions are drawn: A modular structure of examinations in secondary school can encourage pupils to adjust their course taking to increase their chances of entering higher education, and a simple way of increasing applications to higher education would be to increase the number of places available.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper examines the seasonal patterns and comovements of quarterly UK macro‐economic time series. The framework used to analyse seasonal fluctuations enables both deterministic and stochastic seasonal factors to be modelled, with these factors being estimated by signal extraction. Tests for both factors are performed and it is found that, although both forms of seasonality are usually present, seasonality is much smaller in prices and interest rates than in output and its components. It is also found that the majority of series contain both seasonal and non‐seasonal unit roots, but that there is no evidence of cointegration at either the zero or seasonal frequencies between output and consumption and between output or prices and money.

摘要:
SUMMARYFour dental clinical trials conducted between 1974 and 1986 are considered. The trials compare tooth‐pastes, with three or six pastes per trial. Between 1400 and 3000 children enter each trial. Complete data for a given child consist of five oral health variables measured on each of three or four occasions, over a period of 3 years. The complete data are transformed towards multivariate normality. Multivariate analyses of covariance, supplemented by canonical variate coefficients and by estimated marginal means, show up significant effects. Questions arising from missing data are discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper proposes a multivariate approach to measuring the richness of vocabulary of a literary text as a tool for problems of attribution of authorship. This approach is then applied to the corpus of Mormon scripture. The historical foundation of the Mormon Church, in particular the church's dependence on the authenticity of the story of Joseph Smith and the genesis of theBook of Mormon, has become increasingly subjected to the stress of open inquiry. This paper contributes to this questioning of the origins of the Mormon faith by assessing the stylometric evidence for or against multiple authorship of theBook of Mormonitself.

摘要:
SUMMARYA new measure of severity of disability was required for the survey of disabled people carried out by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys for the Department of Health and Social Security. The method used was based on the consensus of a number of people acting as judges who were asked to assess the relative degree of limitation of various disabilities and combinations of disabilities. High levels of agreement between judges were found. A unidimensional interval scale of severity of disability was constructed from the judgments for use in estimating the prevalence of disability at different levels of severity in Great Britain.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe 1991 census contained, for the first time, a question on the ethnic group of each member of the population of Great Britain. This paper reports on how a question was developed which has a sufficiently high degree of acceptance from all the main ethnic groups, and which is answered sufficiently accurately, to justify inclusion in the census.
