摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper estimates the proportions of variations in the intakes of dietary energy and protein due to interindividual and intraindividual differences using four rounds of 24‐hour recall data from India and the Philippines. The variances are estimated in a dynamic error components framework assuming that the number of individuals tends to infinity. It is noted that these proportions are affected by socioeconomic factors in developing countries and that the relative contribution of the within variation is likely to decline with rises in incomes. A comparison of the maximum likelihood estimates for the two countries and a breakdown of the samples by household incomes supports this hypothesis. Some implications of the results are also discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe measurement of capital usage has engaged the attention of economists for a long time, because estimates of capital usage are used in investment decision‐making of business firms and in estimating production functions and productivity. The paper discusses various methods that have been used for the measurement of capital usage. A model is formulated and fitted to cross‐sectional data from Nigerian manufacturing industries. The estimate of capital usage compares favourably with estimates derived from other studies.

摘要:
SUMMARYAmong entrants into mathematical degrees in English and Scottish universities in 1985–87 the proportion of women varied greatly between universities and was generally higher in Scotland than in England. Among English universities those with higher A‐level requirements had lower proportions of women mathematicians, probably as a direct result of the smaller proportion of women available with the proper qualifications for entry. The speculation that women might be discouraged from studying mathematics at particular universities that are technologically orientated or have higher entry requirements is examined with quite crude data but not supported. Sex differences in mathematics degree results are small but show a pattern found in other studies, namely greater variation in attainment for men than for women.

摘要:
SUMMARYA study comparing arrest rates of black, Asian and white males, aged 11–35 years, is described. to control for social deprivation comparisons need to be made between those living in the same small areas. This presents problems owing to the difficulties of obtaining estimates of the resident populations in the race groups and the small numbers involved. In areas where most of the non‐white population lived, for those aged 11–21 whites had higher arrest rates than both Asians and blacks, but in the remainder of the city blacks had higher rates. Problems of interpretation are discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYOfficial low income statistics contain analyses based on income ‘before’ and ‘after’ housing costs. We argue that in measuring changes in the real level of income before housing costs over time an inappropriate price index is used. In particular the price index accords insufficient weight to the relatively rapid rise in housing costs which form a disproportionately large part of the expenditures of the poor. We propose an alternative income measure which largely overcomes the sources of bias and appears to us to be a more reasonable definition of income before housing costs. In the final section we evaluate the usefulness of before and after housing costs measures.

摘要:
SUMMARYAfter some brief historical comments on statistical aspects of causality two current views are outlined and their limitations sketched. One definition is that causality is a statistical association that cannot be explained away by confounding variables and the other is based on a link with notions in the design of experiments. The importance of underlying processes or mechanisms is stressed. Implications for empirical statistical analysis are discussed.
