SummaryWe discuss some limitations of the concept of the incubation period and conclude that for useful mathematical modelling more attention should be given to the density function for the seronegative period. In particular, the seronegative period for low dose infection warrants attention both from the point of view of mathematical modelling and from empirical studies.

SummaryMonthly figures for the number of AIDS cases are extrapolated forwards for 2 years under various assumptions. The rate of increase is roughly exponential, the doubling time having remained roughly constant since mid‐1985 at around 14 months. The possibility of the doubling time increasing represents the major uncertainty in short‐term forecasting.
