摘要:
SummaryA number of procedures for forecasting a time series from its own current and past values are surveyed. Forecasting performances of three methods—Box‐Jenkins, Holt‐Winters and stepwise autoregression—are compared over a large sample of economic time series. The possibility of combining individual forecasts in the production of an overall forecast is explored, and we present empirical results which indicate that such a procedure can frequently be profitable.

摘要:
SummaryAn insufficient amount of protein in the diet is held to be at the heart of the problem of persistent and widespread malnutrition in the developing countries. However, when one examines the available data, the conclusion is clear that what diets lack is not protein but energy foods to enable the body to utilize the protein people actually do eat. The paper presents a method of investigating the nature of the problem based on the simultaneous examination of diets for protein and energy, illustrates it on available data and concludes that protein malnutrition is the indirect result of inadequate energy intake. There is no evidence that the quality and concentration of protein in cereal‐legume diets normally eaten in the developing countries is inadequate to meet protein needs provided energy intake is adequate. The protein problem is therefore essentially a socio‐economic problem. Production of semi‐conventional, cheap, protein‐rich foods using modern technology, and distribution of factory foods so produced through special feeding programmes as recommended by the international bodies, will be a costly and inefficient method of solving the problem. The belief that diets are deficient in protein and that the deficiency is acute can also be traced to the new interpretation that has been placed on the meaning of recommended intake by the FAO/WHO expert committee on nutrition, namely that as an individual's intake falls below the recommended level, the risk of inadequate intake increases. The validity of this interpretation and its implications are examined in the paper.

摘要:
SummaryA method of forecasting the manpower requirements of organizations with homogeneous, countable and forecastable workloads is demonstrated by application to an anonymous organization. A time‐stable linear relationship is found between nine workloads and the manpower servicing them, and its parameters are estimated. The estimated relationship is used to forecast the future manpower requirements of the organization, from projections of the workloads using the methods of Box and Jenkins.

摘要:
SummaryThe following paper gives an account of a computer‐based information retrieval system on statistical literature which has been developed at L.S.E. over the past 4 years and which is now available to all Fellows of the Royal Statistical Society. It attempts to enumerate the decisions which were made, and which continue to be made as the work progresses, and to show how these decisions affect the kind of service which can be offered to users of the system.

摘要:
SummaryStatistical and computational aids to diagnosis have been studied extensively in the medical literature. The majority of the systems employed in practice require on‐line computational facilities and are based on unrealistic assumptions concerning the basic distributions involved in the problem. In this paper alternative techniques are developed using simple statistical arguments. An application to the differential diagnosis of jaundice is considered.

摘要:
SummaryEmpirical evidence on the differences in earnings between single women, married women and men is examined. First a mathematical function is developed which approximates to the “length of service‐earnings” profile, the logarithmic transformation of salary being used to generate a distribution which does not grossly violate the restrictions of multiple regression analysis. Dummy variables are introduced into the basic multiple regression equation to represent different categories of teacher: various interaction effects between these variables are examined. The results show that although most of the difference between the earnings of married women and men can be accounted for through length of service standardization, there is still a significant difference remaining which cannot easily be explained. Single women were found to earn consistently more than their married counterparts but less than men, especially in primary schools. A slight deterioration over time in the position of married women is detected, when results for 1963 and 1971 are compared.
