摘要:
SUMMARYThe term ‘exchangeability’ was introduced by de Finetti in the context of personal probability to describe a particular sense in which quantities treated as random variables in a probability specification are thought to be similar. We believe, however, that judgments of similarity are more primitive than those of probability and are at the heart of all statistical activities, including those for which probability specifications are absent or contrived. In this paper, we give a definition of exchangeability in a descriptive context, which extends de Finetti's concept to a wider domain. Our objective is to analyse the logic of judgments of exchangeability (or similarity, or homogeneity), to clarify the roles of context and data analysis in these judgments. We give several examples to illustrate the nature of these judgments in description, inference and prediction. We use this discussion to clarify the extent to which judgments of similarity in inference and prediction can be based on data, and the extent to which they must rely on pure faith. Our discussion is a contribution to the emerging theory of data analysis, the as yet largely atheoretical and informal process that precedes and supports formal statistical activities.

摘要:
SUMMARYFour teams in the four divisions of the English Football League have been playing their home matches on artificial pitch surfaces at certain times over the last 10 years or so. A Commission of Enquiry (Football League, 1989) recently recommended that the introduction of further artificial pitches be restricted. One of the factors leading to this recommendation was the possible advantage gained by the home team on such pitches. A statistical analysis of the end‐of‐season results for the four divisions over the last 10 years (carried out for the Football League) showed that there is indeed such an advantage and that it is of a sufficient scale to be a cause for concern.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper examines the effect of social mobility on voting behaviour by using diagonal reference models. The EM algorithm is used to fit the models. Asymmetrical mobility effects are found on voting for the Labour party, the downwardly mobile from the salariat being more likely to retain the voting patterns of their class of origin than are the upwardly mobile into the salariat. It is suggested that this asymmetry can be explained by countermobility.

摘要:
SUMMARYA critical examination is made of the role that statistical methods have played in the understanding of depression. The development of instruments for measuring depression is illustrated by reference to the Beck depression inventory and the Hamilton rating scale. The controversy over the existence of one or two types of depression is examined from the perspective of the statistical tools used. Some of the problem in studies of the heritability of depression are outlined. The development of clinical trials of treatments for depression is examined, with particular reference to electroconvulsive therapy and maintenance therapy, and the role of meta‐analysis is discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYIt is frequently argued that changes in economic variables are measured more reliably than their levels. This may happen if measurement errors are autocorrelated. Autocorrelation should be taken into account in the least squares balancing of national accounts. Formulae are presented for the error structure which is likely to arise from extrapolation away from or interpolation between bench‐mark observations. Balanced estimates are presented for the UK national accounts, 1920–38, taking into account the autocorrelation likely to have been generated in data construction.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe allocation of resources is often based on estimated need derived from an analysis of historical expenditure. Such estimates can be associated with substantial statistical uncertainty. This paper proposes a formula which allows for this uncertainty by shrinking the allocation from an estimate‐based allocation to a simple size‐based allocation. An example in educational expenditure is given.
