摘要:
SUMMARYThe effects of adjustment for measurement error are illustrated in a two‐level analysis of an educational data set. It is shown how estimates and conclusions can vary, depending on the degree of measurement error that is assumed to exist in explanatory variables at level 1 and level 2, and in the response variable. The importance of obtaining satisfactory prior estimates of measurement error variances and covariances, and of correctly adjusting for them during analysis, is demonstrated.

摘要:
SUMMARYMost analyses based on surveys of social attitudes are limited to the tabulation of response percentages for individual questions and cross‐tabulations. In this paper we use methods which seek to extract more information on the pattern of relationships between variables. These are based on the supposition that expressions of attitudes may be explained by assuming that they depend on a few basic dimensions or categories. It is common for response patterns to be incomplete because of refusals or partial responses. This paper describes and illustrates the latent class and latent trait models used in the analysis and gives the appropriate extensions needed to cope with missing values. It also discusses various methods by which the goodness of fit of the models may be judged.

摘要:
SUMMARYReconciliation of conflicting reports on the dating of events has typically been approached as ‘data cleaning’. We present an alternative approach of modelling discrepancies by a statistical measurement model. The model combines two explanations of ‘telescoping’, systematic compression of the timescale and heteroscedastic random measurement error. The model can be viewed as a mixed generalized linear model with random effects within both mean and variance functions, or alternatively as involving multiplicative random effects. We illustrate the model in the context of multiple mothers' reports of the onset of puberty in their daughters. Estimated by penalized or predictive quasi‐likelihood, the model correctly distinguished the different mechanisms for telescoping and provided much improved estimates of the true age‐of‐onset distribution.

摘要:
SUMMARYPopulation estimates have important implications for resource allocation within government and commerce, and are often assumed to be without error. Currently, central government provides annual population estimates for all the local and health authority districts in Britain, but estimates are needed for smaller areas, typically for electoral wards and postal sectors. Small area estimates are provided by some local authorities and commercial organizations, using different methods; the accuracy of these estimates is modelled here within a multilevel framework. Certain characteristics of the small area and of the method of estimation are included as explanatory variables. Results show that the method of estimation used is of great importance.

摘要:
SUMMARYWe discuss ways of analysing panel data when the response is binary and there is attrition or drop‐out. In general, informative or non‐ignorable drop‐out models are non‐identifiable and arbitrary constraints on the drop‐out model must be imposed before carrying out a statistical analysis. The problem is particularly acute when predictors as well as response variables are lost by attrition. We describe a likelihood‐based method for dealing with the drop‐out process in this difficult case and show how the effect of non‐identifiability can be reduced by importing additional data from a cross‐sectional survey of the same population. The methods are primarily motivated by data from the 1987–92 British Election Panel Study and the 1992 British Election Study.

摘要:
SUMMARYIncomplete observations with missing values of a covariate may be incorporated into the fitting of a linear regression model by maximum likelihood methods. This paper considers the extension of these methods to accommodate a complex sampling design. Point estimators are weighted within a pseudomaximum likelihood framework. Standard errors are estimated by a jackknife method. The approach is applied to the fitting of a linear regression model to data from the British Household Panel Survey, where the response variable is a measure of stress and the covariate with missing values is income.

摘要:
SUMMARYIn this paper we use nonparametric and semiparametric estimation procedures to analyse whether the restart programme in the UK has had any effect on reducing unemployment duration. The restart programme consists of an interview of the long‐term unemployed to counsel them on effective job search. The statistical results utilize experimental data in which a control group does not receive the restart interview. The results show that the programme has had a significant effect (for the treatment group) of reducing the duration of unemployment. However, if we distinguish between exits to ‘any job’ and to full‐time jobs lasting at least 3 months we find that the treatment group is no different from the control group in exits to ‘stable jobs‘.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis study examines the effect of the immunization programme in four rural areas of Bangladesh. Using a multilevel discrete time hazards model, this paper identifies the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics which influence the uptake of immunization. However, even after controlling for these observed factors, a considerable amount of variation between households remains due to unobserved characteristics. There is also a large amount of geographical variation in the uptake of immunization with evidence of village level variation within intervention areas.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper exploits recent developments in computer visualization to generate new graphical representations of event history data. The resulting three‐dimensional displays are closely related to Lexis plots and can show the complete complexity of the collected data. As in dynamic graphics, the displays can be rotated, zoomed and otherwise manipulated to investigate particular features of the data. A reanalysis of an existing data set of family work histories shows their practical use.
