摘要:
SummaryThe paper studies two aspects of residential density: the number of persons per room, and the number of rooms per unit area. The pattern of variation of persons per room, obtained from the 1961 Census, is first studied for the London Conurbation in relation to socio‐economic character, age distribution, and position. Similar studies are done for the other conurbations of England and Wales, and for a series of areas based on the counties. For the secondvariable, rooms/acre, the relationship with the socio‐economic character and position of a neighbourhood is examined for the London Conurbation and for Oxford.

摘要:
SummaryThe paper sets out the order of magnitude of the deficiencies in current food supplies in terms of the incidence of undernutrition and malnutrition in the less developed countries of the world. It presents nutritional targets to ensure quantitative adequacy of the diet and a modest improvement in its quality, and sets out the implications of these targets in terms of different foods to feed the growing population. It concludes that food supplies of the less developed countries will have to be increased at a rate of over 3·4 per cent per annum to achieve the minimum nutritional targets within a foreseeable future.Since trade and aid can provide only a fraction of these supplies, these increases must be met from increased production in the countries themselves. However, the rate of increase needed is far in excessof what has been achieved over the last 30 years in the less developed countries. Furthermore, unlike in the past, these increases willhave to be brought about mainly by increasing the productivity of land. The possibilities for doing this exist, but their realization will call for the use of modem technology within the appropriate economic and institutional framework. Investment needed for the purpose appears to be beyond the capacity of most countries unless substantial aid is forthcoming. With the uncertainty of foreign aid and the undesirability of continuing dependence, progress in the less‐developed countries would be greatly facilitated by combining programmes for increasing agricultural production with those for reducing population growth. Even so, the present rate of growth of population is so fast that over the next 15 years the realization of the food targets may be nowhere in sight. Immediate adoption of a family planning programme will, however, help to create conditions for a favourable course of development in the future.
