摘要:
SummaryA new model for representing sentence‐length distributions is suggested in equation (8) which is a special case of equation (2), with parameter γ = −12knowna priori.Eight known sentence‐length frequency counts taken from English, Greek and Latin prose were all satisfactorily described by distribution (8). For these eight fits, the average probabilityp(x2) was 0‐50. A ninth observed distribution, taken from a Latin text of unknown authorship failed thex2test applied to the fit of the data to the model in equation (8). This corroborates Yule's (1939) conclusion that it is highly unlikely that de Gerson could have writtenDe Imitatione Christi. It is further conjectured that the last‐mentioned observed frequency distribution could be well represented by the more general model in equation (2), with a parameter γ much smaller than −12.

摘要:
SummaryIn this paper we present a cross‐sectional and intertemporal statistical analysis of the administration expenditure of a large sample of United Kingdom universities. The purpose of the analysis is partly to examine the use of regression analysis as a basis for the distribution of publicly provided recurrent funds between universities, and partly to investigate the scope for economies of scale in administration expenditure. We find that there are considerable economies in administration expenditure for the expansion of small institutions because of the initial “setting up” costs, but beyond about 4,000 students the economies of scale become small. The economy to be gained from expanding a university of average size over the period 1971/72–1976/77, expressed in index form, agrees very closely with that suggested by the University Grants Committee, presumably on the basis of its own regression analysis. A comparative analysis of the university administration expenditures, however, shows a significant variation of individual institutions about the regression line, and this casts doubt on the usefulness of regression analysis as a basis for the allocation of funds between universities.

摘要:
SummaryThis paper evaluates four methods of predicting the probability of entry to a university science‐based course defined according to the UCCA conventions. Each school subject presentation is classified as science or non‐science. Subjects are then aggregated for each pupil in four ways: (1) a simple count of the number of school science presentations per pupil. This shows a monotonic association with entry to a university science course, with three science presentations as a threshold. Balance/imbalance is also important whether expressed (2) in terms of pupils having at least two science and two non‐science presentations or (3) in terms of their having exactly equal numbers of such presentations. But, however balance is defined, pupils on such courses tend eventually to specialize in science. (4) When the number of science presentations is held constant, pupils with a majority of science presentations more frequently study science at university. So do those with higher numbers of science presentations when the science/non‐science balance of presentations is held constant. The choice between the various methods, or of any of them at all, depends on the investigator's purpose and on the data to which he has access. The predictability of university science‐based study from the school curriculum indicates that educational flows are highly structured even in Scotland with its broad secondary school curriculum.

摘要:
SummaryAvailable data, drawn primarily from population census reports, have been used to summarize what is known statistically about the very considerable changes since 1900 in the extent and nature of women's employment in England and Wales. The correlates of work after marriage are examined, largely in terms of derived activity rates of married women of specified demographic and socio‐economic characteristics. Variations among the large towns in the married women's activity rate are also discussed and some preliminary results of a regression of this rate in 1961 and 1966 upon a wide range of characteristics of these towns are presented.

摘要:
SummaryThe widespread practice of revaluing a time series of value aggregates at the constant prices of an intermediate time period involves mixing “backward” and “forward” indices of quantum and of prices resulting generally in a downward bias in the quantum index and an upward bias in the implicit price index during the first sub‐period compared with the second sub‐period. As an illustration the figures of average household expenditure in the United Kingdom from 1958 to 1968 are analysed and the effect is shown of revaluing the yearly expenditures at constant 1963 prices.
