摘要:
SummaryThe place of mathematics depends on a number of factors including individual temperament and taste, and subject matter. Arithmetic should be regarded as a branch of mathematics not as in any way opposed to it. Mathematical techniques may be applied to model building and testing or be used purely for exploratory purposes. After some account of the history of the development in the medical field, two main illustrations are given. Model‐building techniques are represented by a study of the contributions of A. G. McKendrick to the theory of stochastic processes in medical problems; and exploratory techniques by an examination of inverse factorial series as frequency distributions.

摘要:
SummaryIn this paper we show that the standard error formulae given by Lewis (1962) and others for the Stouffer method of comparison of sets of 2 × 2 tables do not lead, in general, to consistent estimators of the appropriate standard deviations. Simple modifications of these formulae, which do lead to consistent estimators, are presented here. Since the relative difference between the standard errors published earlier and the consistent standard errors can be large, the earlier formulae should be replaced by the modified ones. For the analysis ofK2 × 2 tables (K≥ 2), we present here generalizations of the Stouffer method of comparison and also generalizations of the methods of analysis discussed by Berger (1961) for the special case whereK= 2. A simple test of zero second‐order interaction in aK ×2 × 2 contingency table is presented here. We also present some methods for analysingK I×Jtables (describing attitude changes), and some methods of analysis suitable for the situation where the response categories (i.e. the row and column categories in the tables) are ordinally scaled.

摘要:
SummaryIt is shown that the measure of association in a 2 × 2 table formed by paired attributes, in which the marginal totals are not fixed, should logically be some function of the cross‐ratio.

摘要:
SummaryThe use of random numbers for sample selection raises two types of questions. How many sampling units will a set of random numbers identify? How many random numbers will be required to identify a fixed number of sampling units? Answers to questions such as these are developed by considering two variants of the classical occupancy problems of probability theory.

摘要:
SummaryData of World Championship chess matches and of the personal tournament performances of certain chess masters have been examined from the point of view of the players' ages. The author concludes that these data do not indicate that thementalcapabilities of professional chess players are adversely affected by advancing age. Interpretations of the data are suggested and other considerations are mentioned.
