摘要:
SUMMARYIn epidemiologyincidencedenotes the rate of occurrence of new cases (of disease), whileprevalenceis the frequency in the population (of diseased people). From a statistical point of view it is useful to understand incidence and prevalence in the parameter space, incidence as intensity (hazard) and prevalence as probability, and to relate observable quantities to these via a statistical model. In this paper such a framework is based on modelling each individual's dynamics in the Lexis diagram by a simple three‐state stochastic process in the age direction and recruiting individuals from a Poisson process in the time direction. The resulting distributions in the cross‐sectional population allow a rigorous discussion of the interplay between age‐specific incidence and prevalence as well as of the statistical analysis of epidemiological cross‐sectional data. For the latter, this paper focuses on methods from modern nonparametric continuous time survival analysis, including random censoring and truncation models and estimation under monotonicity constraints. The exposition is illustrated by examples, primarily from the author's epidemiological experience.

摘要:
SUMMARYA review of methods for the analysis of the geographical distribution of disease is presented. The topic is of increasing interest to statisticians, though much groundwork has been done by epidemiologists and medical geographers. Methods for the detection and testing for apparent clusters of disease, including those near a possible environmental hazard, are reviewed. Estimating regional mortality rates, possibly to construct disease maps, and methods for investigating the association between disease rates and social, demographic and environmental factors are discussed. In addition, statistical analysis of the spatial spread of epidemics is mentioned.

摘要:
SUMMARYExtracts from R. A. Fisher's letters referring to the responsibilities of statistical consultants are considered along with his view of his own role as a scientific consultant to the Tobacco Manufacturers' Standing Committee in the late 1950s. Contrary to a recent suggestion that Fisher may have been ‘misrepresenting data on lung cancer while acting as an adviser to the tobacco industry’, his letters show that he was very deeply concerned about the possible misrepresentation to consumers of an alleged statistical result. Further, Fisher believed that it is ‘only by giving students the opportunity of making fine distinctions in the logic of the subject that they can learn to recognize the difference between honest and dishonest work in statistical practice’.
