摘要:
SummaryThe number of maternity beds to be provided in hospitals depends upon the number of maternities in time, the proportion of those maternities which take place in hospital, the duration of stay and the proportion of the beds provided which are actually occupied. At a period of rising birth‐rate, when plans for new hospitals are also being made, it is necessary to examine these four factors and their interaction.National future births are difficult to predict, and regional and local figures even more so. Whatever beds are provided must be administered flexibly, for types of case admitted, and for duration of stay, to allow for local and temporal fluctuations in demand. The necessary provision depends on certain policy decisions. If certain agreed high‐risk groups are all admitted, about 70 per cent. of all deliveries would take place in hospital, but no “normal” mother's second or third babies would be born in hospital. If the “normal” mother stays in hospital for 10 days after delivery, the average stay after delivery will be 11·0 days. After adding the relevant number of days for antenatal care and admission before delivery, 15·6 bed‐days will be occupied per delivery. The present system in many hospitals of booking cases to the nearest month cannot be improved by booking to a shorter period, such as a fortnight. Further, owing to the variability in the duration of gestation of booked cases, and that in the daily numbers of emergencies, it is not possible to exceed an occupancy rate of about 80 per cent., if all cases are kept for 10 days. These assumptions are applied to suggest the number of maternity beds required by 1970, but it is emphasized how heavily these requirements depend on the assumptions, particularly on that concerning duration of stay.

摘要:
SummaryThe relation between the net rate of migration into standard regions and unemployment rates is examined for the period 1951 to 1961. It is found that high relative regional unemployment is associated with high net emigration, but the relationship is not particularly close, nor does it suggest that internal migration alone would quickly equalize regional unemployment rates. A substantial part of inter‐regional migration is accounted for by other factors associated with the various regions, but transient or random influences also appear to have exercised an important influence. There are considerable differences between regions and between the sexes in their response to changes in relative regional unemployment.

摘要:
SummaryThis paper attempts a direct comparison of the level of investment in Britain and Norway, previously comparable only on the multilateral basis of United Nations and O.E.C.D. publications, in which figures for all countries included are adjusted as far as possible to a single conceptual basis. British investment has been estimated from production data—the Norwegian method—for the one recent year, 1958, for which a full Census of Production is available and compares with Norwegian investment as follows:PercentageofFixedInvestmenttoG.N.P.atMarketPrices, 1958BritainNorwayGross(excluding repairs)16·732·4U.N. estimates15·032·2Gross‐gross(including repairs)22·239·3The improvement element in gross investment is probably understated more in Britain than in Norway; 1958 was a peak year for investment in Norway but not in Britain; about a fifth of the higher Norwegian ratio is due to their more capital‐intensive structure, especially the greater importance of the shipping industry. All these factors go some way to explain the difference in investment ratios, but after taking them into account the Norwegian ratio is still something like 40 per cent. above the British.
