摘要:
SummaryThis paper is concerned with the demand for medical care met by general practice and hospitals in a large community. A record was made of all general practice and hospital out‐patient consultations and of all hospital in‐patient admissions and discharges during a calendar year in a population of some 70,000 persons living in or near the City of Exeter. The recorded morbidity is examined in relation to personal characteristics derived from general practice records and from a special census. An approach to the construction of a mathematical model to describe the operation of a system of medical care in the context of the National Health Service is discussed.

摘要:
SummaryThis paper gives results concerning subject commitments in the sixth form and below from the school surveys forming part of the Society's Project on Factors influencing Choice of Higher Education. The subject combinations studied by pupils at G.C.E. O‐ and A‐level and how the schools are organized to achieve these combinations on their timetables are shown to be a function of the university entry requirements which are percolating below the sixth form usually to 2 years before O‐level. The implications of this on the demand for higher education are discussed.

摘要:
SummaryThe literature of theoretical statistics, including probability and stochastic processes, and applied statistics is dispersed over a wide range of books and journals. The theory is expressed in various notations and at various levels of mathematical sophistication; it has often been developed expressly to solve a problem in some applied field. In the past, there were no journals devoted purely to statistical theory but their number is now quite large so that much of the new theory is published in these specialized statistical journals. There are also many monograph and textbook series which publish new syntheses of developing fields. However, it is not desirable that all reviews of statistical theory and its applications should be published in these statistical journals, for many statistical techniques and branches of the theory are closely associated with the subject matter and reviews of these statistical techniques and theory in non‐statistical journals often serve very useful purposes. It is the task of the bibliographer to bring some order to this chaos. Some description has been given of the bibliographical aids to the statistician, the abstracting journals, the review‐type journal, encyclopaedias, indexes to the journals and the general statistical bibliographies. The practice of statistical bibliography in a department of mathematical statistics has been described and some attention has been given to the cost of such a bibliography in terms of time spent by academic and clerical staff.Biographies and personal bibliographies are discussed as sources of references for the statistical bibliographies and for the history of statistics. The various uses of the bibliographies of statistics are detailed. Some remarks are made on the history and historiography of statistics. Special attention is then devoted to the uses of theBibliography of Statistical Bibliographiesparticularly to the inclusion of references to the author biographies and bibliographies. It is hoped that this book will contribute towards an informed view of the history of statistics and a better documentation of historical articles. In Part II, we have analysed the so‐called information explosion, the multiplication of the journals and the need for systematization of the bibliography of the literature. We have noted that there has been some pretentious writing on information retrieval. Bearing in mind the high cost of machine retrieval methods, chiefly in the input, we have given an opinion that bibliographic purposes in statistics would best be served by experts in the various fields undertaking bibliographies and reviews of the field.

摘要:
SummaryThe purpose of this paper is to consider some problems confronting research workers as a result of the current rapid growth of literature in probability and statistics. It will become clear that I am in fact discussing a few of the difficulties I have myself encountered in attempting to keep up with two or three research areas of personal interest. In the main paper to be read at this meeting, Professor H. O. Lancaster, of the University of Sydney, will describe in his comprehensive survey several bibliographic methods of resolving our “information explosion”.

摘要:
SummaryEntropy has been proposed as a meaningful index of industrial concentration. It is shown that necessarily accurate estimates of entropy can be obtained from grouped data. Using the suggested procedure, employment concentration as measured by entropy is estimated for 26 two‐digit industries in each of the six Common Market nations. The relationship between firm and industry size and concentration is then analysed, as are the international similarities in industrial structure.
