摘要:
SUMMARYFriedman and Tukey (1974) introduced the term “projection pursuit” for a technique for the exploratory analysis of multivariate data sets; the method seeks out “interesting” linear projections of the multivariate data onto a line or a plane. In this paper, we show how to set Friedman and Tukey's idea in a more structured context than they offered. This makes it possible to offer some suggestions for the reformulation of the method, and thence to identify a computationally efficient approach to its implementation. We illustrate its application to empirical data, and discuss its practical attractions and limitations. Extensions by other workers to problems such as non‐linear multiple regression and multivariate density estimation are discussed briefly within the same framework.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe statistics published regarding the ethnic origin of offenders and others dealt with by the criminal justice system are described, and also the results of surveys of the general public in relation to crime and the police. The problems of interpreting these statistics are investigated. There has been no satisfactory analysis of arrest and offender rates comparing ethnic groups controlling for relevant social factors. Research is needed to investigate possible disparities in the treatment of the ethnic minorities throughout the criminal justice system.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe paper investigates, using data collected by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the relationship between earnings and a cardinal measure of responsibility designed to reflect an individual's level of autonomy in four different areas of work. A close relationship between the logarithm of earnings and responsibility is found. It is shown that this result, along with the characteristics of the growth of responsibility with age, can be integrated into a model of age‐earnings profiles. The complete model generates the well‐established results that mean log‐earnings increase quadratically, while the variance of log‐earnings increases linearly, with age. The approach would appear to be widely applicable since the responsibility measure can easily be applied to a wide variety of occupations, unlike measures based on job titles.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis study aims to establish an appropriate framework for the identification of those members of the corporate sector that might be expected to suffer from financial problems, leadingceteris paribusto failure. It focuses on two central issues: the maximization of the period of forewarning of impending difficulty, and the maintenance of the projective efficiency of the discriminative model by the incorporation of anticipated future macro‐economic and company‐specific developments within the forewarning period. The analysis integrates the traditional multivariate discriminant function approach within a projective model of corporate behaviour—itself linked to the Cambridge Growth Project's multi‐sectoral dynamic model of the UK economy.
