摘要:
SUMMARYThe assessment of school effectiveness in educational research studies is considered from the viewpoint of statistical modelling. A variety of models are applied to a set of data on 907 pupils in 18 schools from one Local Education Authority. We argue for the general use of variance component or “random parameter” models for the analysis of such studies involving clustered observations. For the data examined, the model which regresses school mean outcome on school mean intake (i.e. the “means on means” model) is shown to give estimated school effects considerably different from those produced by other models. In the light of our results, we comment on several recent large‐scale British studies of school effectiveness.

摘要:
SUMMARYRates of death from liver cirrhosis in England and Wales and in Scotland are presented for the period 1881–1981. A subset of these are analysed using an age‐period‐cohort model. The results of the analysis are discussed with special reference to the role of alcohol consumption in the aetiology of cirrhosis, and possible differences in consumption between the areas.

摘要:
SUMMARYSome statistics was taught in schools in the nineteen thirties, but little progress could be made in the next twenty years, since few teachers were interested in teaching it. In 1952 and 1968, the RSS published reports on the teaching of school statistics, and together with the IoS presented a joint submission to the Cockcroft Committee in 1979. These three reports differ considerably in their perception of the relationship between mathematics and statistics, and the kind of courses required at school level. This paper suggests that the development of school statistics needs to be regarded as part of the larger problem of adapting school mathematics to meet the needs of the many less exact sciences that now use it, as well as the needs of school physics.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe design of an efficient procedure for sampling a rare population can present a challenging task. This paper reviews a variety of methods for sampling rare populations, including screening methods, the use of disproportionate sampling, multiplicity sampling, multiple frames and snowballing. The practical feasibility of the methods is discussed, and examples of applications are given.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis bibliography on the literature of random and pseudorandom number generation and testing covers the period 1977–1984 and supplements two earlier bibliographies by the author published in theInternational Statistical Review, 1972 (pp. 355–371) and 1978 (pp. 89–102). About 300 references are listed chronologically and also under a specially devised classification scheme.
