摘要:
SUMMARYIn the light of an increasing interest in the accountability of public institutions, this paper sets out the statistical issues involved in making quantitative comparisons between institutions in the areas of health and education. We deal in detail with the need to take account of model‐based uncertainty in making comparisons. We discuss the need to establish appropriate measures of institutional 'outcomes' and base‐line measures and the need to exercise care and sensitivity when interpreting apparent differences. The paper emphasizes that statistical methods exist which can contribute to an understanding of the extent and possible reasons for differences between institutions. It also urges caution by discussing the limitations of such methods.

摘要:
SUMMARYJust as there are different interpretations of probability, leading to different kinds of inferential statements and different conclusions about statistical models and questions, so there are different theories of measurement, which in turn may lead to different kinds of statistical model and possibly different conclusions. This has led to much confusion and a long running debate about when different classes of statistical methods may legitimately be applied. This paper outlines the major theories of measurement and their relationships and describes the different kinds of models and hypotheses which may be formulated within each theory. One general conclusion is that the domains of applicability of the two major theories are typically different, and it is this which helps apparent contradictions to be avoided in most practical applications.

摘要:
SUMMARYFor the last 30 years, the question of religious mobility has generated increasing division and controversy among social scientists. This is particularly the case among sociologists of religion, where an on‐going debate concerning the expected growth in conservative Protestant churches at the expense of their more liberal colleagues has dominated the literature. Using recent data from both Great Britain and Northern Ireland and employing a technique of analysis not hitherto adopted in the religious mobility literature, this paper examines the nature and extent of religious mobility within the UK. The results suggest that, whereas the majority of church members never change their religion of origin, for the religiously mobile, religious disaffiliation is by far the most common outcome.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper discusses the use of improved approximations for the estimation of generalized linear multilevel models where the response is a proportion. Simulation studies by Rodriguez and Goldman have shown that in extreme situations large biases can occur, most notably when the response is binary, the number of level 1 units per level 2 unit is small and the underlying random parameter values are large. An improved approximation is introduced which largely eliminates the biases in the situation described by Rodriguez and Goldman.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe paper considers trends in the incidence of suicide in London in relation to national trends and highlights the distinctive fall in its suicide levels. Within London differentials across boroughs and wards are investigated, with particular regard to contextual variability across subpopulations in the impact of social deprivation and social fragmentation (anomie). Patterns of causation also differ for suicide disaggregated by age group and sex. The relevance of these differentials for explaining the distinctive trend in London's overall suicide rate is discussed.
