摘要:
SummaryEdgeworth's major early work in statistics is reviewed in the context of the history of statistics in the nineteenth century. Edgeworth's intellectual development before 1890 is discussed, and his style of writing and its effect upon the spread of his ideas is considered. Special attention is given to Edgeworth's methodology for the comparison of means and his early efforts to test goodness of fit, and an 1885 anticipation of an analysis of variance for two‐way classifications is discussed at length.

摘要:
SummaryFollowing a brief introduction to Graunt's observations on deaths caused by diseases, we consider the first mathematical paper in epidemic theory, namely Bernoulli's study of smallpox. Both the original continuous time model and an analogous discrete time formulation are outlined. This leads on to the analysis of a simple epidemic in discrete time; a threshold theorem depending on the infection parameter is derived. The general epidemic in discrete time presents greater mathematical difficulties, but a threshold theorem is also obtained for it, of which the salient points are given. Finally, some practical results are sketched for a discrete time model of Saunders (1978) on the spread of myxomatosis among a rabbit population.

摘要:
SummaryFor measuring changes in consumer prices over long spans of years a chain index with annual links has substantial advantages over a traditional constant basket index. But to realise the benefits in full the chain index requires a greater flow of annual information. Not only must there be a continuing household expenditure survey to provide up‐dated weights but there must also be a regular monitoring of shopping behaviour and up‐dating of the retail outlet samples to follow changing shopping patterns. The ideal information from shops is difficult to obtain and keep up to date and this makes inevitable the use of approximate procedures at the lowest stages of the index calculations. If carefully handled these approximations are unlikely to introduce noticeable errors into a chain index.

摘要:
SummaryThis paper formalizes and extends proposals by Sir Richard Stone for adjusting initial unbalanced estimates of the components of a matrix so that they optimally satisfy accounting requirements imposed by tabular form. Stone's proposal, based on linear combinations of initial unbiassed estimates, has many potential applications in national income accounting, input‐output construction and demography, amongst other fields. Given that the Stone adjustment procedure simply represents the first‐order conditions resulting from the minimization of a quadratic loss function it is possible, as is done here, to develop alternative procedures for minimizing the constrained loss function. These procedures, based on the conjugate gradient algorithm, prove to be much more efficient than the traditional solution, both in terms of time taken and storage requirements, and the optimal adjustment of very large (say 1,000 × 1,000) social account matrices becomes quite feasible. Some other minor problems are handled which relate to multiple prior estimates of cell members, and cell members for which no prior estimate exists at all. The techniques were applied to a social account matrix constructed for the Muda River district in West Malaysia and, though the results are too detailed to present here, figures are given which indicate the feasibility and usefulness of the methods.

摘要:
SummaryManufacturing plants in the U.K. with more than a thousand employees suffer from a high frequency of strikes which increases very rapidly with size. It is shown that the available data are consistent with strikes' being generated by a random process in which individuals (or bargaining units) in plants of all sizes are subject to the same probability of striking; but it is the combination of these probabilities in larger plants that leads to their higher observed strike‐frequencies.

摘要:
SummaryA distinction is drawn between science and technology. The former has been studied by Karl Popper and his ideas are widely accepted; the latter has had less attention. The inter‐relations of the two are considered and it is pointed out that neither can be said to underlie or dominate the other though practitioners of each are often intolerant of the alternative approach. Statistics may have a more important role to play in technology than in science; it may itself best be considered as a technology rather than as a science. These ideas are discussed in the context of the teaching and practice of statistics in general and medical statistics in particular.

摘要:
SummaryMany of the existing statistical methods for aspects of educational planning are such that their data requirements cannot be met by many countries. We discuss models which not only make use of available data but are also geared by financial constraints. Specifically, models for recurrent expenditures are obtained and these are applied to the Nigerian situation.
