摘要:
SUMMARYA result can be regarded as routinely predictable when it has recurred consistently under a known range of different conditions. This depends on the previous analysis of many sets of data, drawn from different populations. There is no such basis of extensive experience when a prediction is derived from the analysis of only a single set of data. Yet that is what is mainly discussed in our statistical texts. The paper discusses the design and analysis of studies aimed at achieving routinely predictable results. It uses two running case history examples.

摘要:
SUMMARYDeoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) profiling is now commonly used in attempts to resolve disputes concerning paternity. In this paper, we evaluate simple rules based on the DNA profiles of the mother, child and putative father that could be used to decide whether the putative father is or is not the father of the child. Probabilities of deciding that the putative father is the father when he is not and of deciding that he is not the father when he is are calculated. We also discuss the use of more complicated rules taking into account bands other than those present in the child but not in the mother, the effects of inbreeding in the putative father and of relatedness of mother and putative father, and the importance of conditioning the probabilities of wrong decisions on the number of bands in the putative father's profile.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper reviews work in the field of alcohol control policy concerning the importance of population mean consumption as a determinant of the proportion of 'excessive drinkers' and the level of alcohol‐related problems. It is concluded that the statistical basis of this work is unsound. The effects of specific policies on the proportion of excessive drinkers cannot be inferred from their effect on mean consumption.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper considers parametric graduation for mortality, fertility and migration with particular reference to the development of parameterized local and regional demographic projections. Parametric graduations facilitate comparisons of demographic schedules across many areas and across time points—a feature which can be used to advantage in making forecasts of the three demographic components and thus in setting the assumptions for projections. Particular methodological issues raised are the questions of parsimony in fit and that of overdispersion in relation to binomial or Poisson assumptions. The analysis is illustrated with cross‐sectional material for the 32 London boroughs and with time series at the level of Greater London.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper undertakes a statistical analysis of the Universities Funding Council's 1989 research selectivity exercise, focusing on differences between universities in the research rating obtained by individual cost centres. The statistical analysis indicates that several variables are significantly related to interuniversity variations in research rating. These include a cost centre's size, the research rating of other cost centres in the same institution, research expenditure per staff member and whether a university was previously a college of advanced technology. Several other variables, such as the student:staff ratio, were found to be statistically significant in only a few cost centres.
