摘要:
SUMMARYThe public lending right (PLR) operation involves complete records of all issues from a small sample of public libraries. The extensive data thereby accumulated is the basis of various statistical analyses all of which are primarily concerned with the problem of estimating the precision of the PLR estimates of total issues per author. In addition to methods for constructing and assessing confidence intervals for total issues for each author, there are investigations aimed at describing and explaining the large variation between libraries, analyses of the pattern of title incidence in libraries and consideration of alternative sampling schemes.

摘要:
SUMMARYStatistics is of ever increasing importance in medicine. We review the need for statistical knowledge in medicine, what doctors need to know about statistics and whether the state of statistical knowledge among doctors is adequate. We then consider the ways in which doctors acquire statistical knowledge. We discuss undergraduate and post‐graduate teaching, the quality of many text‐books, the example given by papers in medical journals, the use of statistical computer programs and statistical consultancy. Lastly we discuss ways in which both doctors and statisticians can act to improve matters.

摘要:
SUMMARYA high proportion of criminal arrests are of teenagers. This section of the population is in sharp decline. Analyses have therefore been carried out of the possible effect on offences and arrests of demographic change in the period to 1995. The various analyses are based on historical data for London. Where possible they take account of the level of police manpower as well as population. A major difficulty is found to be the underrecording of the true extent of crime. The tentative conclusion is that any reduction in recorded crime is likely to be much less dramatic than the statistics at first sight suggest.

摘要:
SUMMARYOrdinal logistic regression analysis was used on a sample of 1007 babies under 6 months of age seen at home and in hospital to identify the symptoms and signs of serious illness. A model with seven symptoms and 12 signs was used as the basis for a scoring system where each symptom and sign was assigned an integer score proportional to its regression coefficient. A baby's illness score was then the sum of scores for any signs or symptoms that were present, asymptomatic babies scoring 0. The scoring system gave a sensitivity (score 13 or more) of 92.1%, specificity (score less than 8) of 98.3% and positive predictive value (score 20 or more) of 98.0% when applied to a notional community sample. The system has been made into a score card called Baby Check, designed for use by parents and health professionals to quantify the severity of a baby's illness. Baby Check indicates when the baby's condition warrants further assessment or treatment.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe census of population represents a rich source of social data. Other countries have released samples of anonymized records from their censuses to the research community for secondary analysis. So far this has not been done in Britain. The areas of research which might be expected to benefit from such microdata are outlined, and support is drawn from considering experience overseas. However, it is essential to protect the confidentiality of the data. The paper therefore considers the risks, both real and perceived, of identification of individuals from census microdata. The conclusion of the paper is that the potential benefits from census microdata are large and that the risks in terms of disclosure are very small. The authors therefore argue that the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys and the General Register Office of Scotland should release samples of anonymized records from the 1991 census for secondary analysis.

摘要:
SUMMARYAn alternative analysis of an index of British industrial production for the years 1700–1913 is provided. The focus of attention is the components structure of this time series. Specifically, evidence of evolving growth rates and cycles is sought. The methodology employed is the standard autoregressive integrated moving average model building approach. In contrast with previous findings based on an alternative methodology, we find strong evidence against the hypothesis of evolving growth rates and little support for cycles of any substance.
