摘要:
SUMMARYModern time series methods are applied to the analysis of annual demographic data for England, 1541–1800. Evidence is found of non‐stationarity in the series and of cointegration among the series. Building on economic models of historical demography, optimal inferential procedures are implemented to estimate the structural parameters of long‐term equilibria among the variables. Evidence is found for a small, but significant, Malthusian ‘preventive check’ as well as interactions between fertility, mortality and nuptiality that are consistent with the predictions often made in demographic studies. Tentative experiments to detect the influence of environmental factors fail to reveal any significant impact on the estimates obtained.

SUMMARYA model‐based approach to the analysis of disease incidence around a fixed point is presented by considering the radial and directional effects to be expected from emissions from a putative source. In addition we present some score statistics which can be used to test for spatial effects.

摘要:
SUMMARYSpurious correlation refers to the correlation between indices that have a common component. A ‘per ratio’ standard is based on a biological measurement adjusted for some physical measurement by division. Renowned statisticians and biologists (Pearson, Neyman and Tanner) have warned about the problems in interpretation that ratios cause. This warning has been largely ignored. The consequences of using a single ratio as either the dependent or one of the independent variables in a multiple‐regression analysis are described. It is shown that the use of ratios in regression analyses can lead to incorrect or misleading inferences. A recommendation is made that the use of ratios in regression analyses be avoided.

摘要:
SUMMARYFor some time, there has been interest in quantifying the risks of progressing to Aids from infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) associated with changes in the immunological markers. Until recently, little attention has been paid to the considerable variability of these markers and the corresponding effect on estimates of relative risk. We estimate the risks of progression to Aids associated with immunological markers among a group of homosexual men infected with HIV who have been followed at quarterly intervals for 5 years. Errors in measurement in the markers are shown to bias these estimates. Smoothing techniques are compared for their effectiveness in reducing the amount of variation in the markers and the subsequent bias in the coefficients. A simulation study compares the effectiveness of various methods of smoothing in reducing the bias of the estimated coefficient.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe preparation and fieldwork for the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles was carried out between 1987 and 1991. The survey was a combination of a face‐to‐face interview and self‐completion questionnaire and comprised 18876 individuals aged 16–59 years in Great Britain. The response rate was similar to other sample surveys on less sensitive topics. Women were overrepresented but the distributions of other demographic characteristics were similar to other data sets. The external validity and internal consistency of the data were found to be adequate. The likely sources and effects of bias are discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYThis paper uses data from the Scottish Young People's Cohort Study to investigate the factors affecting participation in post‐compulsory education in Scotland. These surveys are a unique source of information on routes through school and on entry to higher education. The major aim of the paper is to estimate the effects of the structure of post‐compulsory schooling and certification on participation rates. The main statistical technique is multilevel logistic regression. Another aim is the investigation of regional differences in participation in Scotland.

摘要:
SUMMARYThe batting average is ubiquitous in cricket. In this paper we show that the traditional batting average depends on an unrealistic parametric assumption. We propose a nonparametric approach based on runs scored for assessing batting performance. The methods have been applied to a large sample of players at various levels of cricket, examples of which are featured in this paper. The statistical methodology employed is akin to that used in reliability and survival analysis.
