摘要:
SUMMARYRecent research has indicated the isolated development of school roll forecasts in each local education authority of Britain, each using similar methodology but with wide variations in data intensiveness, resources, documentation and responsibility for production of forecasts. This paper reviews the nature of this variation and the reasons for it. The current restructuring of schooling in Britain directly limits local scope to plan educational provision; the changing role of forecasting is reviewed. The paper develops measures of forecast accuracy that are related to the costs of inaccurate forecasts and applies these measures to data from a variety of local education authorities. The accuracy of complex and more simple models is compared. The accuracy of headteachers' estimates of their future school rolls is compared with centrally prepared estimates.

摘要:
SUMMARYDuring the last few years several studies of childhood cancer in the vicinity of nuclear installations in the UK have been undertaken. These studies have looked in particular at leukaemia rates around specific nuclear sites but also around groups of installations. The original suggestion of a raised level of cancer in young people based on cases around Sellafield has been supported by the findings, but the overall magnitude of the relative excess is much less than first found. Attempts to control for potential confounding variables in some of the analyses have not explained the excess, and its cause—whether related to radiation or to other factors—is still unclear.

摘要:
SUMMARYIncreases in the incidence of childhood leukaemia have been reported in the vicinity of several nuclear installations. Conventional models of risk of radiation‐induced leukaemia are clearly inconsistent with the assumption that these increases are due to radiation exposure resulting from the proximity of these nuclear installations. Alternative interpretations are that the reported increases are (in some way) an artefact, that the increases are real but are not primarily due to radiation, that the population, or individuals within it, have received higher doses than expected, that present risk models are seriously flawed or that more indirect (e.g. genetic) pathways involving radiation are implicated. Present evidence makes it unlikely that population radiation doses or radiation risk factors could be in error by such large magnitudes as would be required. Attention has therefore focused on indirect mechanisms. Areas where further investigation may prove rewarding include radiation genetics, the chemistry of transuranic elements, personalized dosimetry and models of the role of hypothetical fluctuations in dose delivery, heterogeneity of dose and sensitivity within the population and the interaction of radiation with other agents.

摘要:
SUMMARYLeukaemias are of several types, the proportion attributable to each varying with age. The causes of most childhood leukaemias are unknown. A few are associated with genetic abnormalities and a few to chemotherapy given after birth. Many more are due to exposure to ionizing radiation with possibly 8% attributable to exposure to natural radiationin utero.Clues to aetiology may be obtained from the age distribution of the disease and the variation in incidence with place, ethnicity, socioeconomic conditions and time; but much of the variation is likely to be a nosological artefact. The existence of clusters in space and time, which would point to the importance of environmental factors, has long been suspected but is unproved.

摘要:
SUMMARYSome weaknesses in the usual statistical approach to assessing the risk of disease around potential point sources of environmental pollution are listed. Extensions to take account of extra‐Poisson variability, and to deal with the problem of how to choose an area around the source when little or nothing is known about the distance scale of any possible effect, are reviewed. Techniques for mapping are also briefly reviewed and their relevance to assessing reactive(post hoc)hypotheses is discussed.
