摘要:
SummaryMining is an extremely hazardous occupation and so it is not surprising that the incidence of incapacity due to industrial injury and to the prescribed occupational diseases is high. However, the published figures indicate that coalminers also have very much higher than average rates of absence attributed to “other” sickness. This paper attempts to review the evidence to see whether coalminers are a very unhealthy group or whether there is a substantial amount of malingering among them or whether there are other explanations. The evidence consists of (a) such figures of morbidity as have been published in official documents and (b) the results of two studies carried out by the National Coal Board on material supplied by the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance. For these studies, the data consisted of punched cards, one for each spell of certified incapacity due to sickness, for a sample of miners and for a sample of men in other occupations. The studies related to spells terminating in the years 1951 and 1955‐6 and covered some 60,000 spells in each year. The studies showed that the excess of “non‐occupational” sickness was largely due to short spells of incapacity. When comparing miners with other occupational groups in terms of long spells due to serious conditions, little difference was found. In the discussion, which is necessarily to some extent speculative and controversial, it is suggested that the true excess among miners of morbidity due to conditions other than industrial injuries and prescribed occupational diseases may be slight and more or less confined to certain diseases. Most of the reported excess can be explained in terms of the great physical demands of mining. Some weight is lent to this hypothesis by the pronounced occupational gradient: heavy occupations other than mining also showed an excess, although much smaller, while for the mainly sedentary occupations there was a marked decrement.

摘要:
SummaryDefence Specification DEF‐131,Sampling Procedures and Tables for Inspection by Attributes, has recently been published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office, and is based upon the American Military Standard 105. This paper discusses the features of the Dodge and Romig tables, the Army Service Forces tables, and the Columbia University Statistical Research Group tables, as well as the Military Standard 105 tables, which were considered before the decision was taken to use the latter document as a basis. The differences between Military Standard 105 and DEF‐131 are discussed in detail, with the reasons for the changes.

摘要:
SummaryThis paper is mainly concerned to meet the needs of researchers who are faced with the practical problem of interpreting multi‐way contingency tables and are unable to obtain guidance from standard text books. It presents a general review of the more important methods of analysis, together with a selection of procedures which are computationally the simplest available, and which may be adapted for use with different sampling schemes and/or with theoretical rather than estimated parameters. Since there is no limit to the number of hypotheses that might be proposed in respect of multi‐way tables, there can clearly be no claim of completeness, but it is believed that there are no major omissions.

摘要:
SummaryThe extent and pattern of the post‐war increases of students at the English universities are discussed in Part I with reference to the distribution of the students amongst the universities, type of residence and fields of study. Part II presents data on changes in student‐staff ratios and the composition of the academic profession in respect to grades, and in Part III a few aspects of the rise in central government grants to the universities are examined, particularly its relation to the rise in numbers of students.
