摘要:
A two‐semester course is discussed that focuses on the idea that developments in the sciences and the arts together reveal a constant process of mutual influence and cross‐fertilization. The course develops this thesis using examples from physics, art, literature, and philosophy from Greek times to the present day.

摘要:
An experiment is described for the undergraduate electricity and magnetism or mechanics laboratory to verify results predicted by the standard mathematical theory of free and driven oscillations. All the measurements are made on a series–parallel RLC circuit which is pulsed with a pulse generator when free oscillation is being investigated and is driven with a low‐impedance sinusoidal generator when driven oscillation is being studied. The agreement between experiment and theory is remarkably good.

摘要:
We present the problem of relativistic torques with particular reference to the right‐angle lever problem and outline a simple solution. The important elements of our solution are, first, a reexamination of the classical relation between torque and angular momentum and, second, the consequent realization that in relativistic analysis there exists a net internal torque which exactly cancels the net external torque experienced by an extended body in dynamic equilibrium. We find that the lever has constant angular momentum according to all Lorentz inertial reference systems and that this is consistent with the relativistic relationship between torque and angular momentum. Our solution is not restricted to relativity. It is valid for a wider class of theoretical frameworks.

摘要:
A description is given of an apparatus suitable for measuring magnetic susceptibility in the undergraduate laboratory. Several applications are considered in detail, and extension of the technique to nonmagnetic studies is briefly discussed.

摘要:
The quantum‐mechanical solution for the biharmonic oscillator is presented. This one‐dimensional asymmetric oscillator is described by the potential energy function V(x) = mω12x2/2, x ≳ 0, and V(x) = mω22x2/2, x < 0. One of the more interesting features of the solution is that the energy levels are very nearly equally spaced. The biharmonic oscillator provides a relatively simple model for systems which lack the symmetry of the harmonic oscillator.

摘要:
Surface plasmon phenomena are a topic of considerable current interest. We describe a simple experiment and theory for a senior level undergraduate investigation of surface plasmons in silver films. An ∠500‐Å‐thick silver film is evaporated on the hypotenuse face of a right glass prism. Light (p‐polarized) from a He–Ne laser is incident through the prism on the metal film. At an angle of incidence a few degrees greater than the critical angle for total reflection, a sharp minimum in the reflected light is observed, corresponding to the excitation of the surface plasmon. The minimum in the reflectivity results from the absorption of the resonantly enhanced surface plasmon mode in the silver film. The dispersion relation for the surface plasmon and the reflectivity due to the excitation of this normal mode are calculated. Only a modest vacuum of ∠10−3Torr is necessary to produce the required thin silver films.
