摘要:
The performances of 124 physics graduate students in two departments have been compared with their Graduate Record Examination scores. It is indicated that the currently used forms of the Advanced Physics Test and the Quantitative Aptitude Test are satisfactory devices for predicting a meaningful probability that a student will be a successful candidate for the doctorate. Both tests, however, fail to distinguish among “fair,” “good,” and “excellent,” students. The GRE scores furnish information of significance for the admission of students to graduate departments but they cannot be counted upon to determine which students show highest promise or to which a limited number of fellowships or other financial aids should be awarded.

摘要:
A conference to identify specific problems in areas which are of interest in instruction at the undergraduate level in two or more disciplines was held at Seattle in June 1965. The meetings were organized jointly by the commissions on college physics, chemistry, and biology and were attended by representatives of the college commissions on geology, geography, engineering, agriculture, and mathematics. The work of the conference was carried out by four subgroups which were charged with the investigation of interdisciplinary problems and opportunities in the following areas: (1) The biology-chemistry interface; molecular structure; (2) The chemistry-physics interface, macroscopic and statistical thermodynamics; (3) Quantum mechanics; (4) Interdisciplinary experimental science. Each of the groups made recommendations for future efforts in the area with which it was concerned. Ways of implementing these recommendations are under consideration by the relevant commissions.

摘要:
To review and publicize the materials produced for several new introductory physics courses, and to assess the experience gained in using them, the Commission on College Physics held a Conference on New Materials for Introductory Physics Courses for Science and Engineering Students on 6–8 May 1965, at the University of Minnesota. This paper presents a brief review of the historical origins and general characteristics of the three most important new courses—those developed at Caltech, Berkeley, and MIT. Reports by persons active in teaching these and other new courses are summarized briefly, with particular emphasis on the effectiveness of the new materials with students, and on problems which have arisen during their use.

摘要:
A brief history of Momentum Books, a series of paperback volumes published by D. Van Nostrand Company for the Commission on College Physics, is given. The usage of the books, as measured by sales figures, is given and an appeal is made for comments that will guide the future development of the series.

摘要:
During 1963 and 1964 the Commission on College Physics and the Advisory Council on College Chemistry sponsored a series of conferences whose purpose was the stimulation of projects to design new courses in physical science for nonscience majors. As an outgrowth of these conferences the Physical Science for Nonscience Students Project was begun in April of 1965 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, under a grant from the National Science Foundation. The Project Director is Professor Lewis G. Bassett of the Chemistry Department of RPI. Dr. Elizabeth A. Wood of the Physical Research Department of Bell Telephone Laboratories is Associate Director and Chairman of the Advisory Board, and Professor Robert L. Sells of the Physics Department of the State University College of New York at Geneseo also serves as Associate Director. Further information on the PSNS Project, including a table of contents of the text as it presently stands, an excerpt from the text, and a list of participants, is contained in the PSNS Newsletter #1 which is available from the Project Director.
