A newly discovered letter written by Albert Einstein to a close friend, Heinrich Zangger, reveals Einstein’s reaction to David Hilbert’s work on the gravitational field equations in the theory of general relativity. Hilbert’s work was done at the same time as Einstein’s, and for a short while, Einstein felt that Hilbert had come close to plagiarizing.

The role of induced emf’s in circuits is explored using batteries and bulbs. This technique both uncovers students’ misconceptions about emf’s and provides a route towards better understanding of the nature of induced emf’s. The examples illustrate, at a more elementary level, the effects discussed in recent articles by Reif and Romer.

Streak photography has been used primarily for fluid flow visualizations. A method which extends the application of streak photography to velocity measurements is presented. The technique may be applied to a broad range of fluid dynamical experiments and requires only limited technical resources.
