摘要:
The goals, teaching methods, and requirements of a six‐year‐old physics‐and‐society course are presented and related to the course’s content and survey approach. The problems, frustrations, and rewards experienced in developing and teaching the course are shared.

摘要:
Arguments are presented to explain why the usual approach to the teaching of introductory quantum mechanics, as well as some newer ones, in general seems to fail to achieve any profound understanding of the subject. An alternative approach is suggested which, although not new, has hardly been adopted anywhere, for reasons which are analyzed. A course which has been based on this approach is described. The main aim of the article is to contribute to, and hopefully stimulate, a debate on the various approaches used to introduce quantum mechanics and the psychological and didactic premises on which they are based.

摘要:
The implications of some elementary solutions of the hydrodynamic equations for simple fluids are explored for scaling relations for—and insight into—the dynamics of imploded fusion targets. Because the model is so simple, analytical solutions are available and explicit formulas for such quantities as neutron yield, bremsstrahlung spectra and yield, etc., can be deduced. Where possible, comparison is made with the results of laser‐fusion experiments being performed in the KMS Fusion laboratories.

摘要:
In this paper, we develop an alternate formulation of the electron–photon interaction in the framework of ordinary relativistic quantum mechanics (without second quantization). We use the Dirac equation of motion to recast the current density in a form linear in the photon wave function. This enables us to take the photon as the system and, regarding the electron as an ’’external field,’’ to iterate the photon wave equation by the standard method. In particular, we deduce the second‐order matrix elements of Compton scattering, pair annihilation, and pair creation. The results so obtained are, of course, identical with those of the usual formulation, where the electron is taken as the system and the radiation is treated as the external field. The present approach complements the usual one; together, the two approaches reveal the symmetry of quantum electrodynamics under interchange of source and field.

摘要:
An analysis of the change in the concept of a particle required by the passage from classical to quantum theory suggests a ’’classical particle representation’’ for the latter which should allow purely quantum‐mechanical results to be cast into a form suited to interpretation in semiclassical terms. Application of this representation to the examples of the free particle and the particle in a constant force field essentially reproduces the usual arguments as to how classical trajectories can be generated in the quantum theory, although from a somewhat different point of view than that usually presented. Applying the representation to the energy eigenfunctions of the one‐dimensional harmonic oscillator provides an interesting semiclassical interpretation of these functions and their relationship to the quantization rules of the old quantum theory. Some speculations regarding other possible applications of this approach are also presented.

摘要:
The Lorentz transformation is derived without an a priori assumption that it is linear, differentiable, or continuous. We do assume the invariance of Newton’s first law and order invariance of a sequence of events on a ray of light. The calculations are somewhat simplified by the use of so‐called ’’temporal coordinates.’’

摘要:
A description is given of an experiment to demonstrate the buildup of Poisson distributions with very high precision. Mean values up to 100 can be obtained, which enables a critical comparison of distributions with different means. By using small numbers of sampling periods, it is also possible to show how the means are themselves distributed, and to show that the standard deviation of the means is equal to σ/N1/2, where σ is the standard deviation of the ’’infinite’’ distribution andNis the number of sampling periods. Dead‐time effects are also investigated experimentally.
