摘要:
The partition function of a single hydrogen atom diverges. While the astrophysical solution to this dilemma is the introduction of a density dependent alteration of the partition function, the question of what happens in an arbitrarily rarefied gas remains open. It is argued that in this case blackbody radiation changes the atom’s spectrum. A unified derivation including these effects and the nonrelativistic Lamb shift and spontaneous emission is presented. Then recent numerical calculations performed by workers in the field of Rydberg atom spectroscopy are utilized to estimate the principal quantum number for which blackbody radiation significantly alters the spectrum.

An efficient general‐purpose microcomputer program for acquisition of time‐occurrence data in the general physics laboratory using the AIM 65 is described. Many phenomena requiring periodic data taking up to 500 kHz can be investigated. The minimal hardware interfacing is presented.

摘要:
It is shown that a simple extension of the usual sinusoidal trial solution in elementary textbooks to include a time‐dependent amplitude of oscillation—a special case of the general Kryloff–Bogoliuboff solution—makes it possible to give a simple unified treatment of resonant growth in simple systems at a level readily accessible to beginning physics students.

We reduce the length of the usual algebraic classification scheme of the Weyl tensor by avoiding the step centered around its reduction to canonical form. Instead the different algebraic types are established more economically via the elementary approach of constructing explicit examples.

Superconductivity holds a special appeal to undergraduates and can provide fascinating and instructive experiments in the advanced laboratory. Here we discuss a convenient method to obtain the magnetization curves of superconductors and use the method to study the diamagnetic behavior of tin and vanadium as representatives of the two types of superconductors.

摘要:
The phenomena of limit cycles, bifurcation, and hard and soft excitation arise from solutions to nonlinear differential equations. This paper summarizes the properties of nonlinear differential equations and these related observable phenomena. Current related research in biological and biochemical systems are surveyed. Easily duplicated chemical systems, variations of the Zhabotinskii reagent, are described which experimentally demonstrate the phenomena.
