A method, employing after images, which can be used to investigate the fixation ability of experimental observers is explained. For a limited time period the ability to keep an eye steady on a small point does not change. The gross picture of fixation appears similar whether the eye is under binocular fixation can be studied with this technique.

Consideration is given to the ways in which contact lens wear may affect driving ability. The results of a questionnaire show the subjective differences between contact lenses and spectacles used for driving. Suggestions are given of the ways in hich practitioners may advise their patients to overcome some of the limitations of contact lenses for driving.

The intraretinal electroretinogram is investigated utilizing a systems analysis approach to its evaluation. Complex stimuli are employed to elicit both the transient and steady state response of the retina to light. Extraction of the response is over tungsten microelectrodes and dc amplification with appropriate impedance matching characteristics in the input stage and data averaging technqiues. The system response is discussed in terms of its linear and nonlinear content. From dynamic considerations specific characteristics are noted such as asymmetrical rectification with the on-channel having an amplitude response greater than the off-channel and different latencies and temporal characteristics. Neither channel exhibits a dc response. The steady state frequency response provides band width information and the rate of attention at higher frequencies. At low frequencies the harmonic content is large and diminishes with increasing frequency. The presence of nonlinear components is discussed in terms of retinal anatomy.

A series of spectroscopic rules are described by which the wave length absorption maxima of the intermediators produced following the absorption of light by the visual pigment rhodopsin can be calculated. These rules predictchangesin the absorption maxima of the intermediates based on the absorption maximum of rhodopsin, rather than absolute values of the absorption maxima. There is close agreement between these calculated values and the experimentally observed absorption maxima.

In a pilor study, 11 children performed a nearpoint pencil-and-paper task white wearing: (1) plano lenses: (2) lenses which corrected the subject's ametropia: and (3) a + 0.50 to + 1.00 D addition in combination with the ametropic correction. Three distances between body points were measured photographically. Seven subject showed some significant changes in posture and performance while wearing nearpoint lenses of various powers. The data for all subjects suggested trends related to lens power. These trends featured systematic alterations in nearpoint working distance and performance with reference to a critical lens power approximated by dynamic retinoscopy for each subject.

Available optometric knowledge and therapy can contribute to the successful handling of a great number of strabismic patients. More research in the psychophysiological aspects of strabismic behavior is needed, as is a resurgence of optometric practitioners specializing in the handling of strabismic patients.
