Visual illusions involving distortions of apparent length, size, and direction have been shown to be caused by both peripheral (physiological) and central (psychological) factors. Peripheral components include lateral inhibitory interactions or blurring due to optical aberrations. Central components include distortions from learned patterns of information sampling and cue utilization. With continued inspection, many illusions show diminished magnitudes. It is suggested that this phenomenon of illusion decrement may be used to ascertain the relative contributions of central and peripheral components. In addition, a discussion of the possible implications of illusion decrement for the understanding of the mechanisms involved in perceptual distortions is included.

The epithelial layer of the albino rabbit cornea was completely removed and the rate of epithelial regeneration was monitored by measuring oxygen flux, corneal thickness, and fluorescein staining. Removal of the epithelium caused a marked reduction in the oxygen uptake and an increase in corneal thickness. As the cornea regenerated from the periphery towards the center, there was a return to normal corneal thickness and oxygen uptake. The complete regeneration process took approximately four days. The results of these three methods correlated well and provided a good index for monitoring the corneal regenerative process.

Most methods of measuring hard lens dimensions cannot be used with hydrophilic lenses. However, practitioners must be able to measure the dimensions of hydrophilic lenses with ease and accuracy. In addition, the lens dimensions must remain relatively stable to provide a proper patient response.This study was designed to evaluate methods of measuring the dimensions of hydrophilic contact lenses and to use these methods to examine the stability of hydrophilic lens dimensions under various conditions.Back surface curvature was measured with a series of templates. Thickness was measured using a modification of the optical method of measuring hard lens thickness. Power was measured on a lensometer after the lens surfaces were blotted. Diameter was measured with a hand comparator, making sure no pressure was placed on the lenses.With these methods, we were able to measure all the dimensions except back surface curvature to within hard lens standards.We found that hydrophilic lens dimensions could be altered significantly by storage in improper solutions, by dehydrating and rehydrating, and by extended boiling.

This paper establishes criteria for differentiation between intraocular and retrobulbar forms of optic neuritis, It distinguishes between papillitis and papilloedema as forms of intraocular optic neuritis from the standpoint of subjective and objective symptomology and describes the etiology symptomology and pathology of acute and chronic retrobulbar neuritis. Toxic amblyopia is discussed and clinical differentiation between primary and secondary forms of optic nerve atrophy.

Absorption of black pigment into the tarsal conjuctiva is fairly common among females who use eye makeup. If found embedded in the conjunctiva, particles of makeup are usually observed floating in the lacrimal fluid. However, if floating black partcles are noted, the pigment is not necessarily found embedded in the conjuctiva, even among those who have used eye makeup for many ears. It appears then that not all individual conjunctivas have this phagocytic appetite for black pigment used in eye cosmetics. If absorbed in sufficient quantity, the condition can become permanently irritating and uncomfortable. The absorption process is irreversible and there is no known cure.

The public health courses taught in the schools of optometry are increasing their course content to include more material to aid the student to understand the many facets of public health. However, an additional consideration for redirecting the emphasis of the course should be evaluated to prepare the optometric student adequately for future practice. This consideration would guide the students in the methodology of how to interact, understand and relate to the community in which he will practice.The orientation of the course is to stress the total concept of health and not merely medical care, of which visual care is a sub-unit, and which has been the prescribed format of most past courses. The other factors which contribute to well-being are emphasized: these would include the social, behavioral, political and economic components of health.A list of priorities, criteria and recommended course topics for lecture are discussed and evaluated.
